Russian Forces Trying to Seize Chernobyl, Ukraine's President Says

Last edited Thu Feb 24, 2022, 11:52 AM - Edit history (1)

Kyiv, Ukraine (AP) -- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russian forces are trying to seize the Chernobyl nuclear plant.

The plant was the site of the world’s worst nuclear accident when a nuclear reactor exploded in April 1986, spewing radioactive waste across Europe. The plant lies 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of the capital of Kyiv.

The exploded reactor has been covered by a protective shelter to prevent radiation leak and the entire plant has been decommissioned.

Zelenskyy said on Twitter that “our defenders are giving their lives so that the tragedy of 1986 will not be repeated.” He added that “this is a declaration of war against the whole of Europe.”

this will hit Europe harder than Russia.

And Belarus will also be affected, not that Putin or his cronies give a fuck.

I think half the reason Russian troops are in Belarus is to prevent an uprising there that might overthrow Putin's puppet.

Looks like west to east and north or south depending. Currently it looks more like any fallout will fall back on the Donbas and beyond.

radiation detectors in Finland, Sweden, Germany went haywire, which is how we first knew of the disaster.

"The plume from the burning graphite initially traveled in a northwest direction toward Sweden, Finland and eastern Europe, exposing the public to levels up to 100 times the normal background radiation. A very serious concern involves the contamination of grain and dairy products from fallout. This contamination presents the chance for permanent internal contamination. Both Sr-90 and I-131 migrate to vital organs in the body where they are impossible to remove, serving as a constant source of unnecessary radiation and as a cause of cancer or other diseases."

This isn't to say the USSR (particularly Belarus and Ukraine) weren't affected, but at the time the flow did seem to be southeast to northwest.
