As of 20:00 Kyiv time, the situation in the Donetsk region is tense, but controlled by the Ukrainian Joint Forces, reports General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Russian troops continue intensive shelling.

(3,635 posts)but we lost 4 years with Trump in power.
Basically if they had a more powerful military that could damage the Russians more, it is possible Putin would have never invaded.

Nothing like killing your brethren to protect "the fatherland".

Have another Stoli Boris. It's only going to get worse...

(45,033 posts)Facing a stronger opponent, wouldn't you want to draw them in, spend lots of energy, rope a dope and then unleash clobber on a frustrated, off-plan and tired foe?

(7,455 posts)... then a strong resistance up front might shake their confidence. There's a big difference between advancing without resistance and having to fight for every mile.
Remember back in the Iraq war when there was hand-wringing about any delay? That's gotta be a lot worse for them right now.

(7,409 posts)While their Air power is small compared to us it is far more than Ukraine has. Same with their tanks. Either putin is seeing what NATO and the rest of the world will do with his small incursions or something else is going on.

(7,455 posts)1) Coordinating such a massive operation is not easy. The U.S. is pretty much the only power with a lot of relatively recent experience.
2) Russia has some professional troops,. but a lot of its troops are poorly trained by Western standards. That makes this kind of movement even harder.
3) Poor logistics. There's an old saying.... amateurs talk tactics, professionals talk logistics. Ties in heavily to number 1.
4) Iffy equipment. The majority of Russian equipment is old and poorly maintained.
5) The Ukrainians are fighting for their lives. Morale matters.
BUT.... I doubt this stall lasts. Russia has a lot of hardware and people there. Eventually that force will be brought to bear. And Putin has a lot on the line. He will pour resources into this.
Still... I doubt this is going nearly as well as he'd hoped.

(7,409 posts)But their military has become very modern in the past decade. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/27/world/europe/russia-military-putin-ukraine.html
I think it might be more that putin doesn't really want a big war and he is looking to save face and pressure for a better diplomatic outcome with his minor incursions. Or not, what do I know?
