because she couldn't get them during the Soviet years. She sent me outlines of her kids' feet so I could mail shoes for them.

(38,375 posts)2. In the 1980s we had neighbors who went to Moscow to visit
Relatives. They talked about buying tomatoes and vegetables for them because produce was scarce and expensive.
The neighbors had escaped during the Carter administration and talked about being put to work in agriculture (eg farm hands) even though they had engineering degrees.
