(58,469 posts)to the contrary having them arrested and treated harshly, those protest numbers are especially impressive.
Kudos to the courage of the Russian Protesters.
Thanks for the addition Rhiannon.

(7,715 posts)Actually, let's call these fiends what they are: kleptocrats. They are thieves and criminals of the highest order.
By withholding the sanctions for Putin, Joe is playing a divide-and-conquer game. The other kleptocrats will get mad at the Murdering Moscow Midget. Then freeze his cash a bit later (I have no doubt that the US and allies are monitoring every account they know he has beneficial interests in).
It would be great if a drone strike could take out that yacht.

(83,979 posts)A yacht?
I can't even.
Women, men, children and pets are in a subway as a bomb shelter. They are crying and in fear and Bernie focuses on a yacht.

Whats the point of this tweet at a critical moment like this? What we need are calls for intense negotiations for a cease-fire before a wave of refugees begins. That means now. And it requires your voice, Bernie. #nowarinukraine

I appreciate any recs I can get on that thread since you don't like this one.

(67,782 posts)As for me, I don't post OPs for recs. But that's just me.
What's more on point are the responses to that tweet in the OP.

(83,979 posts)Did you see the moms and kids interviewed in the subway station, now bomb shelter?
I broke down crying.

(67,782 posts)It's a shame some American politicians don't put the focus on that but continue to dwell on their obsession with whatever.
What we should be worried about at this moment is getting those people to safety. Taking away Putin's yacht will not get them out of the subway and return their cities to peace and calm.

(83,979 posts)So many of the GOP are applauding Putin, dozens of them went there to celebrate the 4th of July. Remember that. Tfg called him a genius to move on the Ukraine. WTF!
Uncle Joe
(58,469 posts)President Biden whenever he criticized or acted against Putin as "not being tough enough" etc. etc. or something along those lines instead of giving some measure of support or at the very least just keeping their mouths shut, it's so surreal.
It's almost as if they prefer Oligarch Putin to succeed!
Interesting post.
Uncle Joe
(58,469 posts)with trying to divert the focus of the OP from the root cause of the problem, Putin's oligarchy.
The 100 million dollar yacht is a symbol of that extreme wealth, especially in a nation with the poverty and plight of the Russian People.
If it wasn't for that and our own orange oligarch, those people most likely wouldn't be crying.

(83,979 posts)I commented here about his focus on a yacht and not the people. So sorry you misread my post. It was about what he focused on and that was not the Ukrainian people

(82,849 posts)It looks to me like Sen. Sanders is contrasting the crime Putin is perpetrating against humanity while apparently giving priority to making sure his superyacht is safe from seizure by civilized people. He is pointing up Putin's callous inhumanity and materialism at a time when sizable segments of the American body politic are lionizing Putin.
It may not be the specific angle others want to take in their public comments, but I think it's a valid point.

Perhaps that is just me as the body counts rise. As if we didn't have enough deaths with COVID.

(8,361 posts)Vladimir Putins latest invasion of Ukraine is an indefensible violation of international law, regardless of whatever false pretext he offers. There has always been a diplomatic solution to this situation. Tragically, Putin appears intent on rejecting it. The United States must now work with our allies and the international community to impose serious sanctions on Putin and his oligarchs, including denying them access to the billions of dollars that they have stashed in European and American banks. The U.S. and our partners must also prepare for a worse scenario by helping Ukraines neighbors care for refugees fleeing this conflict. Finally, in the longer term, we must invest in a global green energy transition away from fossil fuels, not only to combat climate change, but to deny authoritarian petrostates the revenues they require to survive.

(7,715 posts)Kleptocracy is what is the essence of Putin's TWENTY-THREE YEARS AND COUNTING as the leader of Russia (including the fictitious time of Medvedev as "leader" ).
Why would anyone excoriate the OP? Kleptocracy is the essence of Putin's leadership of Russia. The sanctions go to exactly that. That yacht is a symbol of that kleptocracy. There are numerous posts on DU and articles generally about the suffering of the Ukrainian people. This is one important aspect of that.
It is terrifically awful what's going on, but I fail to understand the alleged "insensitivity" of the OP or the tweet. What am I missing, please?
