A line from a Lord Peter Wimsey novel by Dorothy Sayers. These day, I take it to mean that whenever the world's attention is focused on one thing, we need to look around to discover what the powers that be don't want us to see.
What are the powers behind the curtains doing while this atrocity in Ukraine is happening?

Read up as much as you want, but we're never going to have the sources of info to give us that larger picture. This is why 2017-2021 was such as a disaster, as we had a Russian ass-et in President Biden's role.

Clearly this is the main show for Putin.
But for China, this could be considered cover.
Or any number of other places/people with their own independent agendas.

(100,133 posts)Just looked them up on Amazon and the dvds are way too expensive.
Several years ago I looked on Amazon and found there were some book club hardcovers, but printed in several different editions over the years so nothing really matched up. I could end up with three copies of one story and none of another. I did get some additional post-marriage collections, though. I may try again.
Have you ever run across The Wimsey Family, a fragmentary history compiled from correspondence with Dorothy L Sayers, by C.W. Scott-Giles, Fitzalan Pursuivant of Arms Extraordinary. It is a hoot, and in my mind goes under the heading When scholars with a sense of humor go on holiday. I picked that up in a used book store that I wandered through.

(132,440 posts)Edward Petherbridge was a wonderful Lord Peter, and Harriet Walter a very good Harriet Vane. They did "Strong Poison", "Have His Carcase", and "Gaudy Night". Did not, apparently, do "Busman's Honeymoon".
I agree about Ian Carmichael.
I will look for the book you referenced. Sounds delightful.

(100,133 posts)Im having fun tonight shopping Amazon for the miscellaneous book club editions (3 books per volume), which means I really will end up with lots of some, as they are mixnmatch and oddly, none of Nine Tailors. Meh. That one Ill buy separately.
The old paperbacks are quite literally falling to pieces. I like getting good used hardcovers for less than a new paperback.
Ill pick up three books for hubbys birthday while Im at it.
Its been a horrible, horrible week, starting with the news about Griswold. This has been a nice break from it. Thank you.
