This is about Putin's vanity and ego. Russian people do not benefit from this. No one benefits from this. Putin represents himself and himself alone. He wants his legacy to be his superiority as a world class leader. The opposite is more likely to be the outcome. He will be seen as a failed leader in every imaginable way.
