Add: Steves has a documentary called "Rick Steves' The Story of Fascism in Europe" on sale for streaming at $6.99 at www.Vudu.com. I had noticed it but hadn't bought it until just a few minutes ago. He deserved my support after doing this.

(13,344 posts)I will email and ask them to cancel all cruises there until further notice. If enough people do this and those who have booked trips to Russia cancel them, its one small way to support Ukraine.

(16,136 posts)Flying through Istanbul to Cairo, then Athens, and (this is the tricky part) a Viking cruise from Athens to Istanbul. Through the Aegean Sea.
Don't really want to meet up with a Russian submarine.
We really want to go - trip of a lifetime - but I'm very nervous.

(26,848 posts)gets into it. Also, prob. not coincidently, he produced this PBS doc. about European fascism a couple of years ago. With not so subtle hints about how these things can happen anywhere.

(6,699 posts)Right up there with Ken Burns.
I was fortunate to catch his program this past Sunday on PBS, as they were doing their funding drive.
I donated $60 to PBS, as I often do each year, and as a gift, they offered to send me a copy of the program on "Fascism", as well as a CD on preparing for, and basic travel in Europe.
My younger brother, who is a "Who killed Lincoln"... "...Macarther, Kennedy", etc (the o'reilly trash that fox and right wing radio pushes) is planning on traveling outside the USA for the FIRST FUCKING TIME in his 70 years of existence; so I had the travel CD and the fascism CD mailed to him. Not sure if he will watch the fascism CD start to finish...but he might.
Rick Steves was very careful NOT to mention the US in respect to fascism....but anybody with a basic functioning mind can see that the documentary is high lighting what is going on right now in this land.

(1,654 posts)When we visited what was then West Germany (mostly Bavaria) in the 80s it changed my perspective on so much. I was always a Democrat but not very liberal. We were guests of the family of our exchange student and used that as our base with him and his family as tour guides. We interacted with so many people we would not have met on a tour, plus my ex spoke fluent German and many people assumed he was German. I was the one with the confused expression on my face when people addressed us.
And yes, Rick Steves is wonderful. I had his PBS program on Fascism in Europe on my Tivo for years and would rewatch it occasionally, but I think I accidentally deleted it or something because I can't find it there anymore. I'll have to check Vudu for it. Thanks.

(1,132 posts)FWIW - with covid all over the place, Rick Steves travel business has taken a major hit the last couple of years. I heard him speaking with a local NPR host during a pledge week - he took a major hit but managed to keep his staff on the payroll doing other things. He is a good, good man.

I have watched his fascism special a couple of times. Maybe it should be required watching for high school students. It would be a great history lesson.

(63,221 posts)I have always used his guides when traveling and have even been on a few of his tours which were excellent. I highly recommend them. They aren't the usual packaged tours, but more thoughtful, art/culture/history based and you stay in charming B&B's instead of commercial hotels.
You really get a feel for the culture and history of the place you are visiting and most of the people on the trips are quite interesting as well. I absolutely adore him and his travel advice!

(17,460 posts)Where'd you go? I have only travelled to Europe vicariously through his programs, but I've often thought that if I was to go, I'd do one of his tours.
I have a friend who went to Italy on a senior tour and she said it was awful because it was a bunch of older women and all they wanted to do was shop for gew gaws and trinkets for their grandkids and stop at every gelato place they saw. Not my sort of travel.

(63,221 posts)Kutna Hora). They were all great! The ages ranged from young 20's up to seniors with me being kind of in the middle (30's - early 40's at the time). Even the older people were pretty much game for all the walking we did and it was a lot of sightseeing of the historical sites/arts etc. They also give you free time to do your own thing which I liked as well.
The guides are really good and know all about the history and you are introduced to the culture's food, art, music, etc. Like in Ireland we went to pubs that played traditional Irish Music and one night we had dinner in a castle, or in Prague we had a traditional group dinner w/ a few violinists playing Bedrech Smetana - you learn and are exposed to so much! There is time to shop if people want to do that, but a lot of people want to go to a museum or just walk around the streets to take it all in. Some of the meals are on your own so you can get together w/ people on the trip to try one of Rick's recommended restaurants or just do your own thing.
The hotels are usually smaller, quaint hotels or B&B's right in the thick of everthing and not soulless business hotels on the outskirts. If there is a tour bus, it's more like a coach that is for 25-30 people and not some huge Greyhound type of bus. It was just a great mix of thing to do and see but the schedule isn't so jam packed that you feel like you don't have any space or time to yourself (like if you need a nap or something). The trips don't include airfare, so that is an additional expense, but if you can get a cheap flight, they are definitely worth it!
