This is going to sound obtuse at first, but please bear with me...

When I was a kid, my father used to say to me that there is one publication in the United States which never intentionally lies to its subscribers, and that publication is The Racing Form. The reason for this is that if you lie to gamblers, they will never trust your publication again, that it’s all about truth and money and you don’t mess with gamblers because they understand that truth is essential.

Of course, Our media has does nothing but dissemble, distract, and lie to us and even when they are telling the truth attempt to shade it as just one of many possible truths which include outright lies. Philosophers of an earlier time, no matter what their bent was, would be spinning in their graves like gyroscopes. Who on earth with a brain would not understand that Russia was going to do this deed without question and without mercy? Listening to these commentators before the invasion was like listening to football panels prior to any given NFL game: and it was about as ridiculous as anything I’ve ever heard on a pregame sports program. I once had the misfortune to be listening on the radio to Bill Walton who predicted that without question Oklahoma was going to trounce Villanova in the NCAA tournament and with ignominy. I do believe that Villanova set a record for blowing out a team in The Final Four with a 44 point margin of victory. (Walton always despised Philly-area teams). My point is that the certainty with which he spoke angered me so much that I had trouble driving sanely, and I was trying to get home to watch the game. The prejudiced and generally ignorant so-called experts are the bane of our existence as a democracy. Right now, they are fundamentally giving the Republicans the advantage of being a reasonable entity in supporting Putin against a country which has a democratically elected individual at its helm. This is antithetical to democracy, to humanism, to human rights, to quite frankly, sanity.

In my youth, any entities who called for the victory of Russians in this regard would instantly lose their careers and possibly their freedom. If you watch Being the Ricardos on demand, you will see the potential of one headline in one single paper to ruin the careers of the most popular television stars in the USA. it happens to be a terrific film and well worth watching, particularly if you recall that era or having watched the endless reruns as a kid. But I digress: In any event, these Putin-lovers should be drawn and quartered. Politically of course: I would never ever suggest putting them in the sights of a riflescope. That would be bad. And terrible…and inhumane….

AND EXACTLY THAT WHICH THEY HAVE BEEN DOING FOR YEARS.

...that is a fairly broad brush.

That being said, I never thought we would get to the point where so many mainstream outlets bend over backwards to appease monsters like TFG or Putin.

There is a nexus of aligned objectives between the ruling class and stated conservative dogma of low taxes and "freedom" - "freedom" loosely defined as the removal of all corporate constraint. That is the primary source of the tilt toward batshit crazy conservatism/libertarianism that we now see. But it is shocking to see entire media ecospheres totally dedicated to blatant propaganda and lies.

And it is very effective.

Alternative media is a cesspool as well, so much of it badly sourced, based on personal prejudice, or utterly devoid of critical thinking. It is almost unanimously commented on by either fawning acolytes or it descends into mindless troll wars. There is very little actual discussion where ideas are exchanged or respectfully challenged.

Yesterday I fell down a very productive "blog hole" written by a former intelligence officer who had a take on the Ukraine crisis different from anything I have heard to date. He claimed Putin was starting a religious war. The important thing about this wasn't his opinion, but that it was reasoned, well sourced, and frankly very illuminating. Whether or not he was correct, I learned a lot of valuable information in the hour or so I spent following this lead. It took some time and effort as well as some suspension of my own cognitive dissonance to even open myself to actually learn something.

Humans are ripe for easy answers to difficult problems. The world right now is a bewildering place filled with existential challenges. At the same time we stand on the brink of almost limitless opportunity.

Unfortunately, I am not that hopeful that we can get past the hard work of looking in the mirror and realizing that much of the time the enemy is us.
