(13,565 posts)I'm still laughing at the Irish fishermen taking a gift of prawns when they went to meet with Russians.
It sound straight out of Monty Python.
"Well, first we took them prawns."

Don't fire up the Irish; they'll come and get you. Remember the fishermen?

(22,065 posts)protesting against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Russia, I strongly suspect, has walked into a minefield, and when stories of Russian war crimes come out (as in any conflict, these types of stories are bound to come out), this unilateral move by putin is going to get far costlier to Russian interests than originally imagined.
Ukraine was formerly part of the Soviet Union, and now Russian soldiers are fighting against their former compatriots, the Ukrainians, thus the bitterness being developed as we speak is going to last a very long time.
If we thought Afghanistan was bad for the Russians, I suspect Ukraine, with a deep understanding of Russian arms, techniques and knowledge, as well as the terrain, is going to provide a heavy and long-lasting resistance in the manner of IEDs, sniper attacks, and other things that an occupying military force will face.

(7,870 posts)senior and junior and GRU staff. Close down the embassies and their satellite offices, and seal them. Same for Russian businesses associated with Putin and his pals. Do you recall how upset he was when they closed the residence on Long Island?
Putin doesn't accept the rules and niceties of diplomacy. Fine, let him drown in his own filth.

(32,577 posts)... however I'm more than OK with evicting all the Oligarchs that have been buying up properties and businesses in the US and in Western European countries. They can fuck right off, and lose their stolen wealth as they get the hell out.

(7,870 posts)If his ambassadors are sitting in Moscow telling him what a fool he's been he won't like it but he'll know they are telling him the truth.
If everyone shows him the boot and closes his connections to the West he's got no options left. IMO we need to raise the game abruptly and seriously. Putin counts on the world playing slow pitch when he can't handle the hardball stuff.

We must have Nuremberg type trials when this is over.
