CNN Paton Walsh reporting Ukrainians have taken BACK bridge in Kherson UKR.
I see burnt out Russian vehicles in the town in the leading up to the bridge.
I'm wanting UKR to do more than bloody Putrid's nose, the little bit in me "feels" UKR can pull off a conventional defeat of Putrid's forces.
Anything can happen

Perhaps I misunderstood your post. Perhaps I am overly sensitive in the current environment. Perhaps I should leave this for now.

(17,912 posts)I was being sarcastic at the poster who seemed to think we shouldn't get directly involved since Ukraine isn't a NATO member. As though it's no skin off our collective noses. Personally, I think NATO should tip the scales and make Ukrainian airspace a no fly zone for Russians. Nukes? MAD still applies if Puty wants to get sporty.
Sorry. I'm pissed as hell. Fry the bastards.

(56,828 posts)Trump attached a stipulation that they could only be stored in western Ukraine (far from the Russian border & where the conflict with the Russian special forces disguised as separatists were) Maybe Biden could remove those qualifications & Ukraine can ship them to where they're needed?

(17,912 posts)Make it a bloody goddamn quagmire for Putin and his Russian goons.
I'm still steamed as hell, so Russian people apologists should put me on ignore from the start. God knows what I'll type. I'm kind of like that when a friendly democracy is invaded and it's citizens killed by 100K PLUS Russian people in uniform.

(17,912 posts)Possibly just linking Crimea with the breakaway areas in the east, plus areas east of the Dnieper with high numbers of ethnic Russians due to fears of a strong insurgency, easily supplied across friendly, NATO borders. Apparently he is that fucking dumb. Hubris seems to always get them in the end.

(46,041 posts)I hope more Russians surrender. The two forces, plus a big hit to Putin's bank accounts could end this abomination.

(4,690 posts)were recruited recently, and they're very young, so they were the opposite of battle hardened. Moreover, many didn't realize they would be put in a combat scenario and that they would have to kill Ukrainians who they mostly regard as sort of cousins.
This is part of the reason the Ukrainians are doing well. Other factors are that they are fighting for survival of their homes, families and country, plus they are fighting on familiar ground.
Putin must have more capable troops somewhere. They can't all be just cannon fodder.

(12,652 posts)Enlisted soldiers are typically young men and women who can't go to university or trade school and join for two years or so so they have "work experience" when they apply for a job or they're conscripts. Training is minimal. Enlisted also have to just follow orders, so they're pretty fatalistic and morale is tenuous at best.
The officers are slightly better off; they're typically 2/3 year grads who are also looking for work experience while they're waiting for a paying job or entrance to a post-graduate school, unless they really like the politics or realize they don't have what it takes to make it as a civilian and decide to make the military a career. Or they like the idea of swagger and possibly killing, but also want some respect and a better chance of longevity that the typical better paid "bodyguard" or mob enforcer gets. Other than pilots, who are their own breed.
Their special forces are pretty good, because for the most part, they are trained at least as well as a US Marine or Airborne soldier. Their Navy sailors tend to be better quality than their army, because like all navies, sailors do have to operate a bit more independently - there's no where to go when something goes wrong or supplies get low. But even then, Jr. Officers do most of the tech type work; the enlisted are basically just strong backs for the officers and their training doesn't typically go much farther than the Recruit/Basic training most US sailors get.
From what I've observed and been told, Russians generally don't think of the military as a career. Advancement to a successful position with good pay and benefits is very political. Being a municipal bus driver for five years pays better than what most enlisted soldiers would get after the same amount of time.
At most, some will continue to be reservists as a stop-gap employment should they find themselves between jobs, or to get a little extra spending money if they get stuck in a low-wage career path.

(17,912 posts)Conscripts, the traditional Russian troop formation, are anything but when it comes to offensive operations in foreign territory. Conventional thinking is, if you're going to pull off a days long blitz to take Kyiv and quickly knock out much of Ukraine's airpower and defensive capabilities, you do so with your crack troops and best equipment. The lesser units are for mopping up pockets of Resistance. Unless initially throwing cannon fodder into Ukraine is some kind of new strategy, I'd say he's using what he has. Which apparently isn't much. Much of what Russia parades around isn't all that capable compared to western platforms. And they don't have the cash to train like we and our western allies do. Russians rolling crap and getting by on the cheap. Same old story since the fall of Berlin.
Word is the Ukrainians shot down an IL-76 transport aircraft today loaded with air mobile troops. Add that to the ones who got roughed up yesterday at the Antonov airport and Putin is quickly running out of "crack troops."
Fry the bastards!
