Easily the most terrifying headline I've ever read, even for a 'Daily Mail' article

Seriously - probably hyperbole but I'm feeling in need of an Ativan, or two, right now.

Furious Putin prepares to use 'father of all bombs' as brave Ukrainians hold up advance: West warns Russia could use terror weapon that vaporizes bodies alongside a massive Amphibious assault as invaders run into fierce resistance in Kyiv

Feb 2022

From the article:

Thermobaric weapons - also known as vacuum bombs - are high-powered explosive that use the atmosphere itself as part of the explosion. They are among the most powerful non-nuclear weapons ever developed.

A thermobaric bomb dropped by the US on Taliban in Afghanistan in 2017 weighed 21,600 pounds and left a crater more than 300 meters (1,000 feet) wide after it exploded six feet above the ground.

Thermobaric weapons were developed by both the U.S. and the Soviet Union in the 1960s. In September 2007, Russia detonated the largest thermobaric weapon ever made, which created an explosion equivalent to 39.9 tons.

The pieces have gotten smaller over the years, used to be bigger than other chains, but if you ever try it ask for spicy. That's what's really different. I walked my pooches today as usual. Fed the ferals. Talked to my chickens.

My bff in the UK did the exact same thing. We both later talked how it must be in Ukraine.

This war is horrifying, but don’t give fear power over you.

My father lived as a child in London during the Blitz. Spent many nights in the Underground. Mom was growing up in Wales and saw an oil depot bombed in the early days, then later many close calls.

Stay calm. Carry on.

And we don't base any nukes that close to Russia's border.

Firstly they would not be effective against Ukraine. The 'I' stands for intercontinental, they are extremely long range weapons.

2nd it is very hard to believe Russia would be moving nuclear weapons with so little security around them.

Lastly is that Russia has a great variety of missiles in their inventory. Most of them are not nuclear and built for shorter ranges than half way around the world.

If this is deployed, then that means Putin believes the situation is an unexpected shit show and he's desperate to salvage it. The physical damage would of course be immense, but the fallout from the optics would be worse. His whole point was that Ukraine really deep-down belonged with Mother Russia--bombing them to the Stone Age doesn't seem very motherly.

The typical person, no matter the nationality, pays the price for the chest-thumping of some petty, piss-ant, putrid tyrant. Whether the people are on the side of freedom and the common person or conscripted into being on the usurper. You know Putrid Putin will not personally pay any price for this pointless war. But people who would rather just wake up in the morning, go earn a living, then come home to a warm, safe home at night will pay the price he will not. I wish I lived on the alternate Earth where everyone has this basic right to live free from fear for their lives or survival.

It’s never been used in combat, though, and the yield is disputed. Russia claims it has a yield of equivalent of 44 tons of TNT going off at once, which in terms of sheer blast approaches the power of the smallest tactical nuclear weapons.

To put this in perspective, it’s about 1/300th as powerful as the bomb dropped on Hiroshima (13 kilotons, quite small by modern standards).

Is still in their inventory as an operational weapon.

One thing Russia definitely does not want however is to detonate a 50 megaton weapon, or 100 if they care to dial it to the Max, with themselves right in the path of its extremely nasty fallout cloud.

Further reading, oops, shows he was talking about thermobaric weapons. Those are conventional however if used on a city would create devastation on par with a small nuke. That would push any tentative allies away.
