Is it just a talking/listening point? Not so much for those kids in the trenches. Notice that they are not abandoning their posts?

The history of the Polish/Lithuanian/Ukrainian/Russian relationship is fascinating. The city of Kyiv is the ancient center of the Rus tribes dating back to 1000s and there have been many treaties and broken treaties as there have always been resistance movements by Ukrainians (Cossacks included) against Russian domination.

Saddam invaded Kuwait claiming it was historically Iraqi territory, a UN resolution told him to get out, 65 nations enforced the resolution. Putin is using the same rationale, the UN should do something similar, only problem is putin sits on the security council.

I am also reminded of our missteps when it came to regime changes in parts of the world and nation building. I believe the United States is more humble now because of it. Our support for Ukraine and strengthening the resolve of NATO come from those hard lessons learned.

(11,767 posts)What is going on regarding Russia invading a sovereign country is wrong. I feel a great deal of sadness for the people of Ukraine. I hope that they can persevere and that Russia can be dealt with in a way that punishes Putin for his crimes.
Given that most of the people on DU live in the United States, which is thousands of miles away from Ukraine, and most of us have no direct involvement, how would we show that it is more than a "talking/listening point"?
Regarding the people in the trenches defending their homeland, one would imagine that if our country were being invaded by a foreign adversary, that we would also participate in the defense of it. They are brave and they are fighting for their homes and families.
Putin and the Russian troops following his illegal orders should face war crimes tribunals.

Absolutely Putin's invasion of Ukraine is an immediate threat to the West, and to the USA.
Are we going to play this one like we did in WW2? Wait until it's almost too late to finally decide to get serious about stopping the aggressor? We got damned lucky to stop Hitler. Not sure we would be so lucky with Putin if we try to play the waiting game.

(261 posts)We need to support democracy whenever and wherever we can especially when it's being threatened, as it is in Ukraine right now. Fascism is spreading from inside many countries, and there's not much we can do about people who crave authoritarian rule in their own countries, but we as a country do have some power to stop authoritarians from imposing their will on other countries. It's up to us to exercise that will.

(1,617 posts)I guess that is just the way the world works. Right now it is Ukraine. Last week it was nazi truckers. The prior week was vaccine mandates. For a long time it was Jan 6th insurrection and COVID and mask efficacy. I vaguely remember being incredibly worried about a ventilator shortage for a few days. Before that was BLM and finally, yes, kids in cages.
It feels like Thailand or climate will be coming up next. We'll get back to the border when we get back to the border.

(1,105 posts)I'm honestly a little confused by the idea that this is even a question. It's hard for me to imagine any thinking person who can't put himself or herself in the shoes of the people that are facing the threat of a monster like Putin. They are seeing everything they valued or own - gone in the blink of an eye. Freedom, families, future... all swept away as they go under the boot of this madman.

But mostly it matters to me because madmen like Putin have got to be stopped. I dont know when it will ever be that the world stops giving in to the bullies, but that is what it is going to take to set things right again. Whether Ukraine or America. Weve got to face the bullies and weve got to win.
