1) The fate of #Ukraine is being decided tonight, but also the fate of the west. Declare a #NoFlyZone over Ukraine at the invitation of their sovereign govt. Disrupt Russias air ops to give the heroic Ukrainians a fair fight. Its now, or later.

2) History teaches that taking a stand is inevitable and gets more costly with time. We own the skies, Russia cannot hold a candle to our Air power. Do this. Putin is too dangerous to hope he is satisfied with just Ukraine.

(21,330 posts)that would be quite a bold move. Putin sounds so unhinged lately, that may lead to WW III.
I feel pretty sad for Ukraine. I hope there is enough of the military left to maintain an insurgency. I honestly wonder about the plan to move Zalensky out of the country and have the military go underground. I honestly have my doubts that Ukraine has the firepower to stop the Russians but they certainly have the will and enthusiasm. I just don't know. I know they can outlast the occupation if they have enough manpower.
Maybe we can pay off some of Erik Prince's mercenaries?

(21,447 posts)in the war, bringing the US in. Are we prepared for that? Will NATO stand with us if WE get into the fight of our own volition?
Remember, Russia has nuclear subs on both coasts of the US, plus the ability to hack our cyber systems.
If we are ready for such an escalation, can defend ourselves against a nuclear sub attack, and endure cyber hacking, then it would work.
Kinzinger must remember that every action has consequences and a reaction in war time. Decisions must be thoroughly thought through.

(11,098 posts)Russia has nuclear weapons armed at the US but the US has nuclear weapons aimed at Russia. I am not convinced that Putin is a rational actor but he is surely sufficiently aware to know that if there is a nuclear strike made on the US, Moscow will be a mass of smoldering glass. There is a reason that it is called MAD.
We can either stand up to Putin now, or do so when US troops die in Poland. Putin has massed troops on the Polish border, his intentions are clear.

(21,447 posts)regarding the danger that Putin poses to Europe and the world. I am fully aware of those things.
I firmly believe that he needs to be stopped and have said so on these boards. But in defeating him, we need to use our heads as well as our emotional disgust for and anger at him. Defeat him, yes. More than that, totally destroy him, then hang him in a public square while the world cheers.
But do it in a way that causes the least cost of life that we can manage.

(11,098 posts)Putin's rattling of his nuclear saber cannot prevent us from doing what must be done to save Europe.
I doubt we will see Putin hanging from a street light. If it happens, it must be the Russians that put him there.

Thats problem #1.
Seems to me, problem #2 might be the proximity to Russia such that theres family on both sides of the border. Outlanders wont have the fire in their bellies or pride of ownership that the brothers and sisters and aunts and uncles and cousins and other kinfolks do. Outsiders arent personally invested and dont care one way or the other like kinfolks do. So its a fairly easy guess as to who will fight with desperate conviction and who will just be doing a job.

The time for getting big equipment into Ukraine is past. But we might get smaller weapons flown in.

(12,585 posts)A sample of Baghdad Bob's greatest hits:
"Listen, this explosion does not frighten us any longer. The cruise missiles do not frighten anyone. We are catching them like fish in a river. I mean here that over the past two days we managed to shoot down 196 missiles before they hit their target."
"When we were making the law when we were writing the literature and the mathematics the grandfathers of Blair and little Bush were scratching around in caves."
"By God, I think this is rather very unlikely. This is merely a prattle. The fact is that as soon as they reach Baghdad gates, we will besiege them and slaughter them....Wherever they go they will find themselves encircled."
