(7,715 posts)I doubt you have an insight comparable to President Biden. He's about the only person I trust on this issue.
Anything is possible. For example, SoS Blinken has clearly indicated that Putin has his eyes set beyond Ukraine. I doubt you would have said that Poland in 1939 was "Hitler's war." The fact of the matter is that neither you nor I know what's going to happen.
I hope you're right, but, with all due respect, I will take my guidance from President Biden. That's why I voted for him.
Until then, Ukraine's war is MY war, as it is an affront to people of goodwill everywhere, most especially the Ukrainians. It is most emphatically not "Putin's war."

and I trust President Biden, his advisors, NATO, EU and others to keep a lid on it.

(7,715 posts)Do you think folks at that moment thought it was a world war? Indeed, folks referred to it as a "phony war" nearly 9 months.
Wait and see what happens, rather than making definitive statements based on your gut reactions. I truly hope you are right, but you don't know any more than anyone else knows.

(7,715 posts)Other than North Korea, I'm not sure how many times a nuclear power has threatened something like this. But this is a clear sign that the Ukraine war can escalate into something much larger very quickly.
As someone upthread suggested, hopefully, Putin has sane people around him advising not to use nuclear weapons. This threat, however, lowers my confidence.

(7,715 posts)Japan was not invading Europe in the 1930s.
Don't be so condescending to folks.

(7,715 posts)Putin is unstable, and it's not clear what he's going to do. That's the basic point.
I hope you are right, but I trust Joe Biden most of all. Right not, SoS Blinken says that anything is possible including further invasions.
ruet
(10,039 posts)It's his job to, seriously, consider all possibilities. But always remember. Poot'n is surrounded by people who, above all else, want to live. There will be no nuclear exchange over Ukraine. It will not be allowed.

(7,715 posts)But, until this murdering Moscow monster is brought to his knees, anything is possible.
I never thought I would say this, but I miss folks like Leonid Brezhnev, who had the mentality that you point out. I am not sure if Putin does.

And if he does then I say, "well met".

(7,715 posts)There are other folks saying we don't know. This thing just started two days ago. Do you know what motivated Putin to invade Ukraine? Do you know what else he has in store?
Check his quote two days ago. He's referring to using major weapons.
I know you're very knowledgeable about things, but none of us really know what's in store. Let's see what happens.

I hope for the best, but those saying this cannot turn in to WWIII are a bit too optimistic for me. Ill wait a little longer and see.

(7,715 posts)Watch this from 1983, especially after today's nuclear threat by Russia:
I hope to God you're right...I just don't know anymore, especially when a US President was a Russian asset, as are many in Congress even now. This movie was in 1983 when that was unthinkable.
