It's the only explanation as to how they're able to intercept these planes, IMO.
But who knows?
I think we're far more into this than we're showing.

(14,052 posts)I waited hours and hours for confirmation that those planes were *actually* downed and its looking good from various sources, so hmmmm, it sure would be nice if the news was true, and if America helped make it happen, well then, Id be delighted with that news as well!!
Thanks for this post!

Metaphorical
(2,605 posts)US Military satellite resolution has become scary good, to within less than 10 cm accuracy in some cases. High altitude drones might serve the same purpose, and many of them are stealthed and capable of IR tracking - they would be quite invisible to both Russian and Ukrainian forces as well, and a lot of these systems as AI augmented at their manning stations to pick up aircraft movement.

(5,306 posts)They're on a carved-in-granite path and schedule; they're actually not that useful in active combat since they only get a couple of minutes overflight ever few hours. Great for strategic intel, less than useless for tactical information. It's why everyone assumed the double-super-secret Aurora spy plane was real when we abruptly retired the SR-71 - it's simply unthinkable to not maintain some sort of aerial reconnaissance capability.
The RQ-170 on the other hand...

(2,868 posts)specifically stated they no longer have AWACS, as Russian forces dominate the airspace now.
