It's not always the case, but in general there's no reason to suspect otherwise, unless a country has been recently conquered by another.

Certainly just mentioning their religion would be no basis to question their nationality. Again, if someone said they were Christian, no one would think to say oh, better to say Ukrainian of Christian faith.

As for the original nazis, they did not permanently ruin my ability to identify myself as Jewish without having to clarify my nationality.
