(5,888 posts)Not sure I'd have done it.
Seems like most of the Russian troops don't know what their mission is or where they are. Also seems like there are some pretty significant logistical screwups taking place if that many vehicles are running out of gas. I wonder what their rations status is, and of course the maintenance on their equipment. If your tank breaks down it becomes a monument pretty quickly, and a well-placed Molotov cocktail or two can ensure that it doesn't go back to Russia.

Firstly, why didn't the Russians try to detain him? At the very least, disable his vehicle and send him off walking....or "detained"? Perhaps they have ordered the invading troops not to impede civilians and create negative world-wide press.....
Secondly, this fuel issue sounds like sabotage.....by internal sources. Perhaps very high military ranks (via consensus) are working to declaw their troops. Slow down this invasion and let world opinion make Putin the world's #1 Threat.

(24,393 posts)Amazing how phones can effect the worldview on what is transpiring. The smart phone is a huge game changer in military campaigns. Communication obviously, but toolings likke mapping with encrypted overlays that help the Ukrainians know what Russia is doing in real time.
This war is not going to be like invading an Iraq or Afganistan.....
The courage. The keeping of one's mind in the middle of chaos and danger.
Not to mention the person videoing and uploading.
Damn.

(3,282 posts)Russia isn't actually the worlds 2nd best military.
Haggard Celine
(16,843 posts)China's military is probably much better than Russia's. The reason why people think that Russia has such a strong military is because they have nukes, but a lot of countries have nukes nowadays, too. I'd like to see a comparison of the world's militaries considering size, number of powerful arms, hours of training, R&D, etc. China probably would give us a run for our money, and there's no way that Russia is #2. It's very possible that Russia isn't even #3.
BGBD
(3,282 posts)But I think in all out war the US would have clear advantages. Better ability to move forces and react quickly worldwide, better navy, especially aircraft carriers and subs. ALso better ability to control the skies. China strengh is massive numbers of troops, but does that really help them outside of protecting their mainland? Beyond that, our allies and alighnments would be difficult to deal with.
COL Mustard
(5,888 posts)No, I'm not serious. The bleed-over from any major conflict would involve us in unpredictable ways and I don't want that. I'm too old to go back in uniform and I don't want my neighbors to do that either.
Haggard Celine
(16,843 posts)the conclusion that any war anywhere harms all of us, and not only in economic ways. Its sickening to see people running tanks over other people and buildings being bombed, people crying as theyre hunkering down in shelters, others fleeing the turmoil and looking for help in foreign countries. If I feel so bad watching it tall take place, I can only imagine what theyre going through. And so often, the only thing that will stop the war is for others to step in and go to war as well. I sure wish there was a better way. Sometimes I wish that the UN had more power and could stop these conflicts, but Im not sure they could. Im for certain that it would bring forth a new set of challenges.

(18,557 posts)They go where their officers tell them such as turn left here.
The officers may have access to GPS but only to verify their position on a map. GPS has flaws.

(4,423 posts)It can be disabled over specific places if it suits the US military to do that.
The Russians are supposed to have their own independent system, but Im guessing it isnt working so well at the moment as it is being jammed.

The Ohio Division of Liquor Control has also directed that the 487 liquor agencies across the state pull Green Mark Vodka and Russian Standard Vodka from their shelves immediately.
According to DeWine, Russian Standard Vodka is the only overseas, Russian-owned vodka distillery with vodka sold in the state.
The Ohio Division of Liquor Control estimates that there are approximately 6,400 bottles of vodka made by the company currently for sale in the state.
