There are unconfirmed reports that American tank crewmen and tank mechanics are getting on to Twitter to tell Ukrainian defenders how to disable Russian tanks.
In tanker school, the merits and weaknesses of presumed enemy tanks were drummed into us over and over, the better to set up a disabling or killing shot on the tank gun. Good information to share right now.
It's kind of funny; I trained as a tanker towards the end of the Cold War, when it was assumed that any enemy we faced in battle would be fielding Soviet-made tanks, and any allies we had would be using Western-built tanks. We trained rigorously in tank recognition for this reason.
Then the Gulf War came along, and we had to face the fact that at least one ally, Syria, would be using Soviet-made tanks like the T-62, while our enemy Iraq, in addition to operating huge numbers of various Soviet tank models, also used Western-made tanks like the American M-60 and the British Chieftain.

(11,559 posts)Unsurprisingly, the M1A came out on top, but that's beside the point. There was a picture of a T90, and there was an added graphic of an arrow pointing to what was presumably a snorkel, and the text was "Molotov cocktail goes here."
Didn't think much of it at the time, but now it seems a trifle prescient.

(184 posts)I just saw some posts by machinists sharing their knowledge on how to disable tanks. As horrible as it is to see the suffering and horrific things happening in Ukraine, I am filled with hope for humanity to see all the ways people are trying to help. No matter the outcome I can not imagine that Putin will not pay a huge price for his hubris.

some of which look a bit too Soviet for comfort.
During the Gulf War, the few AMX-30 tanks France sent down were used as the 18th Airborne Corps rear guard element. There were two problems.
First, the French armaments industry at the time believed antitank weapons had gotten so good, if a tank got hit it was going to die. Their response was to put only three inches of armor on the vehicle to make it lighter, and enough horsepower to get it the hell out of Dodge before the enemy could shoot back. However, thats a recipe for disaster when youre up against the Soviet 125mm tank cannon.
And second, the turret on an AMX-30 looks a lot like the one on a Soviet tank. If there was a huge tank showdown between the Coalition forces in their western tanks and the Iraqis in their Soviet ones, the appearance of the AMX-30 would be a bad thing.
The French realized this. Their current tank, Leclerc, has very good armor and a turret that looks like no other tank on earth.

(17,145 posts)Best place to hit a tracked vehicle is either the drive sprocket or the idler wheel opposite the drive sprocket.
Drive sprockets are usually attached more firmly than the idler wheel because the drive sprocket is providing
the horsepower/torque. The idler wheel however is not over-engineered, much like a car's fan belt idler, it's
just supporting a bearing and keeping the proper tension on the track so the drive sprocket stays engaged.
Drive sprocket & idler are always higher up than the "road wheels", road wheels hold the track on the ground,
tracked vehicles can lose 1 or 2 of these without affecting it's ability to move. Ignore all of the "intermediate"
idlers, the ones above the road wheels if so equipped.
The "KILL SHOT" is the main idler wheel, without them there's to much slack in the track for the cogs of the
drive sprocket to engage properly. It'll stop moving within a few feet.
