Im sure its fair," he added. "Im sure its possible.

(7,308 posts)Let's be clear. Being a member of of the EU does not make one a member of NATO. That is false.
While I want to avoid a nuclear confrontation, of course, your argument seems to be that we have to let Putin win out of fear of what he might do if he loses. I'm not willing to do that personally. There has to be a line.

(12,286 posts)So why not do it then?
You are arguing two sides at the same time.
1. that is meaningless while in the middle of a war
2. that it will anger Putin and lead to carpet bombing
So which is it?
It can't be both.

(6,531 posts)You are projecting the way YOU feel about the situation. As we have seen already, Putin is doing whatever he wants, and he doesn't care what you or I think. Just because it is unthinkable to the rest of the world doesn't mean he won't do whatever he thinks will help him win. Therefore, assuming that staying off the battle field will prevent him from using nukes doesn't make sense.
This is exactly what he wants to hear. He and Xi want to dominate the world, and Putin will kill anyone in furtherance of that aim. His own country is safe from actual, physical war (except, perhaps, the vagaries of a spiteful wind or two) because the rest of the world follows the rule of law.
Find another way. We are looking for a peaceful, lawful end to the war, but tell that to some mother holding her dead child. Tell that to many others. What are we to do now?

(5,557 posts)Or lets look at it this way.
If Putin is willing to use nuclear weapons to win and/or save face - its probably already a matter of time regardless of if the EU grants immediate membership.
If Putin is not willing to use nuclear weapons, this is a safe move.
Either way, it does not change the overall calculus of the current situation regarding Russia, but does help Ukraine. So just do it already.
