26. I learned rather a lot about Cossacks in my Russian history class

They are not an ethnicity. They are more like a gang than anything else, and basically any Russian, Belarusian, or Ukrainian male can become one, but once you're in, you're in, and all your descendants after you. There are rather brutal initiation rites, apparently. They pride themselves on their fighting and riding ability and most (not all) are devoutly religious (surprised? They held on to the church through Communist years.). The tsars had Cossack bodyguards. So does Putin (I learned that from my priest, who learned it from Putin's first wife's priest). It's very possible that Zelenskyy does too. They don't dress in traditional clothing any more except for exhibitions and parades.
