Biden and the Democrats aren't hurting in the polls because of Americans "economic anxiety."
That's a BS justification pundits used to explain Trump's win in 2016.
Fact is the economy was doing well under Obama throughout his second term. And the economy under Biden has been strong despite 3 issues that unfortunately are largely out of his control: inflation, high gas prices and the pandemic. Add Putin's illegal invasion of Ukraine on top and it's amazing our economy is doing as well as it is.
IMHO, Americans are angry at Biden and Democrats because of good old fashioned greed and racism.
Fact is a lot of Americans turned on Biden the minute he signed executive orders to reverse Trump's most cruel immigration policies. The so called "crisis at the border" made their heads spin.
They may not admit it but they liked Trump's inhumane border policies because it kept the "scary brown people" out of America. Pure racism.
The other major factor was the response of wealthy Americans and corporations to Biden's progressive economic agenda. They were dead set against anything in Build Back Better and succeeded in sabotaging it. Pure greed.
What do many Americans think will happen if they vote to give Republicans back control of Congress? Nothing. And they are fine with that. The wealthy and corporations will rest easy knowing their taxes won't be increased and Biden's legislative agenda is dead.
The racists will sleep better knowing refugees are once again being mistreated at the border and critical race theory is banned from schools.
However independents who either didn't vote or voted Republican to "send Biden a message" will be really disappointed when inflation doesn't magically go away under McCarthy and McConnell and eventually get mad at Republicans.
And in 2024 they'll want to vote to give Biden and Democrats a second chance. But will be shocked when the Republican congress refuses to certify the election results and declares Trump or DeSantis the "winner" because of imaginary voter fraud.
Hopefully this isn't where all this is headed. The next 9 months until election day are going to be crucial. There's still time to get our message out to voters. With Covid restrictions being lifted it should be easier to volunteer in person for campaigns.

(766 posts)And the wealthy's fear of paying higher taxes.
They went on a year long campaign to block Build Back Better and donated millions to 2 greedy Senators who sabotaged it. That definitely hurt Biden and Democrats approval ratings.

(118,492 posts)not rising. People used to dream about a cabin in retirement. Now that is out of reach so they stop with the rational thought, it hurts too much, and go with belonging to passions today, which right wing plutocrats have channeled into a racists false populist cult that likes to own the libs and hurt others, which is scapegoating.

(34,405 posts)Trumps inaction and discouraging of vaccines and masks made the pandemic far worse in subsequent months.
The pandemic adversely affected economies around the world, and many are experiencing inflation. Gas prices are largely out of US control.
Republicans blocking steps to improve things in everyday life has made things worse. And, they will do nothing to curb exec salaries and profiteering.
Etc.

(766 posts)Americans critical thinking skills have vanished.
They want quick fixes and think a President can control everything that happens within the global economy.
A President can't fix everything but he sure can do a lot of lasting damage like Trump did in just 4 short years. We're still dealing with the economic and diplomatic fallout of his incompetence.

And in this case, add the public health equivalent of the same dynamic.
