I am in constant communication with President Zelenskyy. I would like to commend his great sense of responsibility. At the latters request and given the humanitarian situation, I called President Putin.

To President Putin, I reiterated the international communitys demand to end the Russian offensive against Ukraine and insisted on the need to immediately establish a ceasefire.
With discussions starting between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations, I asked him to stop all strikes and attacks on civilians and residential areas, preserve all civilian infrastructure and secure main roads. He confirmed his willingness to commit to these points.
I demanded compliance with international humanitarian law and the protection of civilian populations, such as aid delivery. In this respect, France submitted a resolution to the United Nations Security Council.
To prevent the situation from worsening, I suggested to President Putin that we stay in contact over the coming days. We will continue our discussions.
Putin is probably full of shit but we'll see.

(9,953 posts)... that's good. It seems ludicrous, like sending someone to talk "peace" with Putin's people at the border, but this could keep the dictator from making some horrific escalation.

Macron knows its just a big head game with authoritarians like Putin.
Best of luck, Pres Macron.
Hope it is successful.

(7,430 posts)A phone call doesnt mend anything. Putin is calculating how he can use Macron to gain an advantage with the UKR invasion. Putin is NOT in negotiating mode. Hes still bombing civilian targets. Putin wants to turn everyone into his useful idiots.

(18 posts)He really seems to believe be can reason with Putin but it's making him look very naive, especially on the heels of their discussions prior to the invasion - like stating the Biden and Putin agreed to meet, which turned out to not be true.
He's so set on being the hero in all of this that he's coming off as very weak or naive.

(34,439 posts)the situation. I think hes trying to keep communication open because there is little cost in doing that, and there is always a chance a solution may be found.
I see him as a good man trying hard to deal with an untrustworthy, possibly unbalanced dictator with nuclear weapons.
Santeria
(18 posts)He has been burned twice by Putin - the first by parroting Putin's line that Russia wasn't planning on invading and then the second by saying the US and Russia had agreed to meet - only to have Putin invade a couple days later.
There is nothing gained communicating with Putin at this point. Zilch. All Macron is doing is giving Putin an avenue to appear as if he's willing to talk with western leaders.

(54,358 posts)He must also be thinking that he needs to save some serious face here if he doesn't want to end up like that last dictator who was told to beware the Ides of March, and didn't heed the warning.

When Chernobyl blew, we were told not to eat anything that grew on any European farm north of Spain for almost a year.
