3. This twitter post was a response to posts on twitter, but its a very good point.

The northern hemisphere is relatively conflict free and its alliances well organized. The rest of the world, not so much.

that being said, I do think nuclear capabilities is a big part of the equation

where democracies are weak and money is short. I don't think their intentions are benign.

Putin could take over some of those countries with very little resistance.

But Russia supplies half of the arms exports to Africa. They are building military bases. There are Russian mercenaries in Africa.

I hope he doesn't invade but I wouldn't be surprised at anything Putin does. There's a good chance he's after the mineral wealth, like the Chinese.

6. If you believe some news deserve more coverage,

you can do your part to raise awareness for issues you care about instead of whining about the coverage Ukraine gets.
Also, I've never heard the argument that "Ukraine doesn't deserve this because this isn't Africa/Middle East". It's hard to imagine someone making such a stupid argument. This sounds like a poor strawman.

It rather seems to me that some would talk about anything but not about Ukraine and Russia's atrocities.

9. So, of those conflicts, which has a large country invading a weaker country?

1. Yemen's a local two-way battle that started as a civil war and was picked up by outsiders.

Ethiopia is a civil war. Outsiders pretty much stay out.

Libya had outsiders involved, but they sort of mostly left--even Russia. Somalia? Philippines? Kashmir? The CAR? Mexico's cartels vs government. Etc., etc.? They're all internal conflicts, for the most part.

The closest would be the I/P conflict ... but I think that's not even marked.

2. Which has ramifications much outside the border of the country the conflict's in? Most of those are homegrown conflicts, even if they're acquired parasitic external players over years.

And which has the possibility of quickly ramping up, a la Chechnya?

Are the Houthi rattling nuclear sabers? Boko Haram?

3. Now let's right-adjust the color scheme. Instead of "last year" let's make it "last week." Most of the conflicts would vanish.

And so on.

It was an internal conflict, and 800,000 people died.
