They have lost almost 1/3 of that in less than a week in Ukraine.

1. I do not wish to impugn the honor of any Ukrainian officials, but if history tells us anything it is

that each side in a war overcounts the opponents losses and undercounts their own. Basically every single war. Especially in real time.

2. I believe the Defense Department has said

that while they can't be sure, the 4000 number appears to be reasonably close. Certainly, Ukrainian losses are higher than what's being reported

3. Don't think conquering Afghanistan was that important. At this point,

Ukraine is likely important enough for Putin to kill a lot of innocent people, including young soldiers.. So far, they haven’t cut loose with everything except nukes. Latter is not out of question.

4. Ukraine has a modern military, albeit considerably smaller than Russia's.

Artillery, fighters, tanks, cruise missiles, etc. The Mujahideen in the 1980's...not so much.
