In contrast, astronomical seasons are based on actual facts.

Our calendar and our clocks are not exactly correct compared to the Earth's orbit around the Sun. That's why we have tweaks like leap year and leap seconds. Nonetheless, the equinoxes and the solstices are based on Earth's position whereas the meteorological seasons are based on our inaccurate calendar.

The narrator tries to square this by saying the meteorologists do this for "statistical purposes" because they want to compare apples to apples.

In the end, what difference does it make? It still cold here and there's still snow on the ground.

If one want to dig into this further, consider this. I'm in northeast Pennsylvania and here's the almanac for today's sunlight:

Actual Time: 6:36 AM & 5:51 PM
Civil Twilight: 6:08 AM & 6:19 PM
Nautical Twilight: 5:36 AM & 6:51 PM
Astronomical Twilight: 5:04 AM & 7:23 PM
Length of Visible Light: 12 h 10 m

Confusing and fun, eh?
