President of Russia neighbor Finland thanks Biden for U.S. leadership 'in very difficult times'

WASHINGTON — U.S. President Joe Biden and Finnish President Sauli Niinisto met Friday in the Oval Office to discuss the situation in Ukraine but did not directly address the issue of NATO membership.

Finland is a “NATO Enhanced Opportunities Partner” like its Nordic neighbor Sweden.

Biden thanked the Finnish president for the country’s help for Ukraine. “Finland is a critical partner to the United states, a strong defense partner, a partner to NATO.”

Niinisto thanked Biden for the U.S.’s “leading in very difficult times.”
