Look, we all have to accept that Obama was never going to get 100% of the vote. Clint Eastwood was off his rocker at the convention, but I can't stop liking him as a person or an actor. Same goes with Meat Loaf. He gave us one of the greatest rock albums of all time, and as far I know he's not an asshole. So unless he said something at the Romney event that disqualifies him as a person, I won't stop liking him or his music over an endorsement.

(6,794 posts)Sure he's done some schlock, but he really is one hell of a singer. I found some old TJ LPs at a thrift store and was absolutely floored at some of the stuff he did back in the sixties.

(46,416 posts)I just don't like anything he's ever sung. Edit to add: I generally do not like pop music, or pop singers like Jones, Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, etc.

Best live album ever, IMHO.

Pink Floyd's Pulse album, has the whole Dark Side of the Moon live. Great album.

(19,458 posts)His political views smack of someone who is inherently stupid, or has damaged his brain from drugs and alcohol. What is there to LIKE about the guy? Has he done a ton of charity work? Is he contributing to the world? I never liked his music, never will.
He chose romney because of "the cold war." Yeah.. okayyyy.

Why does he get a pass and not Ted Nugent? Hell, that fool Lindsay Lohan got more grief for endorsing Romney on her her than you're giving Meatloaf.

(9,527 posts)And Bat out of Hell 2 went to number 1 in 28 countries. He still sells well in Europe, especially England.
Getting to the top once is hard, doing in two different eras is even harder. Yes it helped that Jim Steinman wrote those two albums, it's not like Jim Steinman's had a string of hits without Meatloaf.
I find it funny that so many people rush to hate anybody who supports Republicans and be seen as the most pure and fervent in their disdain. I can't get that worked up over who somebody else votes for. I have no problem watching Braveheart even though Mel Gibson is pretty clearly anti-Semitic. Likewise I don't buy the Black-Eyed Peas music even though they support Obama but that's because I happen to not like their music.
But let's say that Meatloaf had never had a really popular hit song at all. Are we really so shallow that we are reduced to looking at current music sales to provide validation that we're supporting the right candidate?

(1,922 posts)Epic was shopping that tool all over the globe.
Epic shaped him, his back-story/image and his style.
They were wining and dining every critic in the country.
Epic knew that enough people would buy in and they would sell a ton of records.
Nothing wrong with that, it happens with great regularity today. There just aren't as many critics and the labels simply write their own press.

I still love Clint Eastwood's films, both his work as both actor and director. I regard The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as the best Western ever made. Even surpassing the work of John Ford.
I'm fully capable of separating an artist's work from his / her politics.

Eastwood's westerns are my all-time favorite.
Neither Eastwood nor Meat Loaf have any sort of 'pull' over me, though. The person should forever be separate from the body of work.
In fact, I'd say it's a safe bet to not even bother to learn about an artist's personal life or opinions.

Yeah it was a stupid endorsement. I'm not going to chuck my copy of Bat just because of one guy. At the time the album came out no one had heard anything like it before. Like Dark Side of The Moon, everyone and everything fell into place at the right time. It was the right writer with the right producer, the right singer, the right musicians and the right engineer all in the right place at the right time.

(5,071 posts)Jim Steinman was the Genius Of Bat Out Of Hell, and the Genius Of Bat Out Of Hell II
Bat Out Of Hell II sold more copies and won a Grammy, Jim Steinman wrote and produced the 2nd album
Bat Out Of Hell III bombed horrible because Jim Steinman was not involved. Yes Meat did cover some of Jim's songs (seven), but Jim was not involved in the making of the album
Bat Out Of Hell I sold 14 million copies
Bat Out Of Hell II sold 20 million copies
Bat Out Of Hell III sold 500,000 copies
That said Jim Steinman never had more success than when he was teamed with Mr Aday
