San Diego gas prices now $5.48 gallon

SAN DIEGO — San Diego is shattering record prices for gasoline, now inching closer to $6 a gallon. According to AAA, The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County rose 10 cents Tuesday, to $5.483 -- its 19th record high in the past 21 days.

"To put that in perspective, that means someone with a typical mid-size sedan with a 14-gallon size fuel tank, they are paying more than $22 to fill up that same of gas today than one year ago," Said Doug Shupe, spokesperson for the Auto Club of Southern California/AAA.

While gas prices are up nearly everywhere, with the current national average at $4.06 per gallon, California continues to have the highest prices in the country.

While across the border, gas in Mexico averages about $4.23 a gallon -- $1.15 Cheaper than in San Diego -- a large portion of what Californians pay goes toward taxes and fees, including 79 cents for federal, state and sales tax; a 22-cent fee per gallon for the "low carbon gas program"; 15 cents for greenhouse gas programs; and two cents for "underground tank storage."

Because the perspective is that they aren’t being bombed.

And it’s important that we tell Russia no, no energy imports.

And the planet. This whole sky
is falling over gas prices is comical. We NEED to get off oil. Oh and what is the current profit margins for the oil companies right now?

is that demand drops for its oil, and only a few countries are willing to buy oil from them. Say, China. Buyers can then demand lower prices for the oil they buy, making their economic situation worse. Meanwhile, the rest of the world, facing higher oil/gas prices, starts to wise up about the need to abandon the fossil fuel energy economy, and starts moving to renewables en masse.

Even in the 90's - most gas stations in San Diego.were company owned and prices were set by the Gas companies depending on the neighborhoods and whether or not they were near business parks or freeway off/on ramps. It is also "strange" that gas prices tend to be plus or minus 5 cents within a three mile radius, except for Costco or the Navy/Marine Corps Exchange stations, which usually price within 10 cents of the lowest local prices due to county regulations, also from the 90's.
See, back then, the GOP-lead County Supervisors passed a regulation that the military needed to add a surcharge to retail operations so that local businesses could remain competitive, due to the amount of retirees, once-a-month reservists, and active duty that were shopping on base not only for themselves, but for friends, relatives, and neighbors because prices on base were typically 20% less than prices in town.
Later, that was expanded to club stores, especially those with gas stations. There are still no laws or regulations in the County against price fixing/collusion.
Last time I checked (admittedly 10 years ago), there were still only 6 independently owned gas stations or franchises in San Diego county. So gas price collision is a distinct possibility again.

Gas prices everywhere else in California can range between 20 cents difference in local areas as they compete for customers. Not in San Diego County. And we also have the highest average prices in California, also - often higher than small communities where there's far fewer storage facilities and they have to bring it in long distances via truck.

Makes you go hmmmm.
