He told Putin to NOT invade Ukraine or do anything rash until after the Olympics is done. Pootie did what Xi asked, he waited and now the ground is soft and his tanks are getting stuck in the mud. I don't think Xi has any real complaint, but he can join the rest of the world and condemn Pootie now, if he really wants to.

What's really upsetting Xi is the knowledge that THIS will happen to China if they should ever decide to invade Taiwan. No shit Sherlock!

Ie Xi knew that the ground would thaw.

What is stunning is that Russia did not. Napoleon and Hitler and now Putin all fell in for either freezing weather or the mushy ground.

So I think Xi played Putin. China has long had deep seeded hatred for Russia/USSR. So why not try the oldest trick in the book. I bet Xi was stunned that Putin fell for it.

Or just take them over economically which is more likely.

Good guy? Maybe? But it was probably the long game which is only good or bad depending if you are the mark or if you lose betting.

I should add that my idea is peppered through literature and media. Don't invade Russia in the Winter is punctuated by the March April thaw.

With temps rising worldwide that softening of the frozen soil is happening earlier. I imagine China figured that out. Stunned that Putin didn't. Early onset dementia?

No way to predict how that one would go, or whether the world would unite for Taiwan as everyone has around Ukraine, but if Xi's smart, he probably doesn't want to risk it.

Xi probably recognizes that Putin will not recover from this. Why stick your neck out, even when your situation is different?

Perhaps he doesn't understand European and American history as much as he thinks.

I mean, Trump did his best to help Putin drive a wedge between Europe and America. The problem for China is that there are DEEP ties there and it takes more than an idiot with a 4 to 8 year term as president to disrupt hundreds of years of relations.

What we here in America, need to absolutely do, is ensure that Republicans do not take back control of the government in any meaningful way.

...China is catapulting the propaganda supporting Putrid at home...

https://www.democraticunderground.com/100216458361

So let's put the breaks on any quick read of a very complex situation.

I would guess that the Chinese are attempting to play both sides of the fence here. Their long term goal is still to be a primary economic power, decoupled from the dollar hegemon, the real source of US global power.

Right now they need Putler...until they don't...

Since the fall of the USSR we live in a unipolar world with the US at the top. That's actually bad for everyone, including the US. That is one of the main reasons we find ourselves in this mess.

Putin's head is stuck in the twentieth century, still thinking he's the supreme leader of a superpower.

China knows this. They're just waiting to scoop up all those Siberian natural resources at fire sale prices, having handed Putin all the matches he needs to burn Russia down.

Matches are cheap.

Putin's ambitions went most horribly wrong when Biden was elected. Trump would have let Putin roll freely across the former Soviet empire for a few Russian hookers and chump change.

...the things that Putler offers Xi right now outweigh the negatives. That will all change in the next decade as Belt and Road becomes a reality.

But Xi also has to be careful. Putler is clearly unhinged at this point.

This is a dangerous game everyone is playing, and a lot of innocent people are dying because of it.

They like to play good cop-bad cop when convenient.

China and Russia both want the downfall of the West, and they present a pincer-like pressure on the West.
While Russia goes for causing disinformation and chaos on one side, China is into snake-like takeover of business and culture on the other.

China is our real enemy, though, because it sees the West as its enemy.
Its 500,000 students who study abroad are held in tight control through threats to their families back home. A good book that explains life in China's internal totalitarian dictatorship, and its approach to 'doing business' with the West is We Have Been Harmonized by Kai Strittmatter (2018).

Fairly common prefixes: exo and endo.

Going along with this newly hatched idea, China really needs the rest of the world to be healthy to continue to support its (China's) growth. They know they can't survive on just their own local markets/needs. And they also know that they are not yet ready to take over and occupy the rest of the planet.
