(94,120 posts)You can say, well, Putins out of his mind. Yes, maybe so, Robertson said. But at the same time, hes being compelled by God. He went into the Ukraine, but that wasnt his goal. His goal was to move against Israel, ultimately.
Its all there, added Robertson, referring to Ezekiel. And God is getting ready to do something amazing and that will be fulfilled.

(22,590 posts)Or, well, not exactly this kind of thing specifically, but he is famous for making all sorts of pronouncements where he "explains" current events based on his religious views. Like describing Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters as God's punishment for something or other, blaming 9/11 on America becoming too "liberal," and all kinds of other horrible stuff.
This article lists just a few of his "greatest hits": https://religiondispatches.org/as-pat-robertson-retires-here-are-10-of-his-most-cringeworthy-moments/
And this one focuses on his homophobic comments: https://www.glaad.org/gap/pat-robertson
All of which is just to say that something like this coming out of his mouth is right in character, and no more or less than what I would expect of him. He's nothing but a hateful, execrable piece of garbage.

(2,941 posts)The evangelicals love themselves some Israel but imo, they hate Jews. All of the so-called support for Israel is in no way related to the Jewish people themselves. Which also goes back to why they have no concern about Palestinians. It is entirely about a nihilistic, bloodthirsty desire for end times bullshit spouted by some first century BCE idiot.
Rabrrrrrr
(58,374 posts)They only support it because in their twisted, toxic eschatology, they actually think that there's going to be the big war of Armageddon and tribulation and all that bullshit, and none of that can happen unless Israel exists as a country (in their thinking), so they will support Israel no matter what it does.
But in their twisted, toxic religious understanding, the Jews all die and go to hell, and these fake Christian assholes are absolutely fine with that because as far as they (the violent dumbshit scripture-twisting hatefilled Jesus-chest-thumping fruit loops) are concerned, the Jews can go fuck themselves.

(22,590 posts)Glad I decided to read the comments first, so I can piggyback on this instead of starting another separate thread on the same thing.
Eastern Orthodox Christians are definitely the "wrong" kind to evangelicals. I grew up going to Baptist churches that had pretty much the same theology as the current "evangelical" crowd, and based on a rationale that would take too long to go into, my church taught that Catholics weren't really REAL Christians, much as they might think they were. The Eastern Orthodox branch of Christianity was never mentioned (only because it wasn't really on the radar), but I'm quite convinced that they would have been regarded much the same way, for most of the same reasons.
There's a VERY strong streak in protestant Christianity (Anerican in particular? Not sure.) of quibbling over who is a "real" Christian and who isnt, and the answers to that question being a really BFD. Just one of many reasons why I got the f*** out early on. I got sick and tired of 1) the emphasis on not going to hell as the ONLY thing that matters, and 2) all the arbitrary and conflicting rules about what determines whether one does or doesn't go there. I eventually came to reject the whole evengelical/fundamentalist conception of hell as even being A Thing, period.
Unlike some people who break away from their early religious training, I'm still not, to this day, an atheist. I get why people become atheists, but that's just not where I am. I do not need to be an atheist or anti-religion in general however, to view the obsession with making sure one goes to the "right place" after death as an unhealthy thing for religions to be focused on.

(38,213 posts)The Russian Orthodox Church that has been fostered by Putin hates a lot of the same people as they do, and they've spent the last 15-20 years being propagandized that Russia is a "Christian nation" they can support for not yielding to the decadence that they themselves see America succumbing to.

I certainly wouldn't presume to speak for evangelists. But MSNBC TV pointed out at least one Baptist group which was helping move refugees out of Ukraine.
I remembered being curious about which Baptist group it might have been (since there's dozens of them) and looked up the Southern Baptist Convention (which is the largest).
They'd already given $406,000 in humanitarian assistance by March 1st and had #StandWithUkraine images on their website. But if it was their people who were actually helping inside the country, I couldn't find mention of it.
Take that for what you will.

(192 posts)That has to be the most hateful thing I have ever heard of. To wish for an apocalypse, I mean really. They think there will be a rapture. I had a Methodist preacher say that the Bible does not say that. But the Southern Baptist do think there will be a rapture. I blame the evangelicals for a lot of this, I think they are totally guilty.

In Cohens recent memoir, Disloyal, he recounts Trump returning from his 2011 meeting with the pastors who laid hands on him and sneering, Can you believe that bullshit?

(7,046 posts)Those Christians who publicly support Trumpism are either ignorant of their own faith and its doctrine and theology, which is the case for vast numbers of them, or they are ignoring their faith, choosing the politics over the spiritual principles, or making the politics their spiritual practice.
Being a peacemaker was important enough to Jesus to link the blessing for being one to being called one of God's sons or daughters. The attack on Ukraine did prompt many Christians in the United States to action, but no repudiation of Trump's praise of Putin's genius or backing away from Trump's advocacy for violence or denunciation of his corruption that helped precipitate this crisis in the first place.
