while driving past three separate gas stations in a one block area. One had gas for $3.14, another for $3.24, and the other $3.45. WTF?

(7,960 posts)It seems that gas prices go down when one of the big banks takes a hit. Can't say Im right. It may just be my personal conspiracy but when the big boys take one on the chin gas prices go down.

(2,795 posts)My husband worked for Shell for awhile. If they purchased gas at a higher price and are still depleting that reservoir, then the price will still be higher at the pump. Maybe the stations with the lower prices refilled their underground tanks with the lower priced fuel so it shows at the pump. All depends on when the station bought the fuel and what that price was at that time. The $3.45 will probably go down soon as they deplete their under ground tanks and restock with the lower priced fuel - then it will be reflected at the pump.

(36,669 posts)and I needed to fill up so I also used Kroger points and got regular for $3.09/gallon. It's always a little lower here in Houston though.

(60,160 posts)gas gouging is common when a storm is coming.
usually the state has a phone # to report overly high prices.

(505 posts)First, gas prices were unusually high in September (http://blog.gasbuddy.com/posts/National-average-hits-highest-ever-for-any-September-date/1715-512547-1327.aspx)
Then, Chevron gives a record 2.5 million to GOP Super PAC (http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2012/10/26/1094541/chevron-election-republicans)
A reasonable conclusion is that the oil industry just got the 99% to donate to the GOP - BIG TIME. Pretty slick. They're not stupid.

(903 posts)here in the midwest, the price has been dropping almost daily- i try not to put more than $15 in the tank at a time- it's going to be cheaper in the next day or two anyway.

(9,681 posts)they were the $3.14 (Shell) and $3.24(Kroger). Yesterday they were both $3.14. the other one (BP) about 1/2 a block down usually runs anywhere from 5-10 cents higher, today they were $3.45. So that's at least a 20 cent jump over night. We aren't expected to get any more than snow showers from Sandy. Are we being fleeced?
Funny thing is you can use your Kroger card at Shell to get even cheaper gas.
