General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDU Has a National Reach - Here's an Example:
Sometimes, what someone posts here on DU goes beyond the readership of this discussion forum. Why? Because Google includes DU in its collection of Internet data and stores everything that is posted here in its enormous database. From time to time, postings on DU get picked up by reporters and published nationally.
Last Summer, I posted here about FEMA's COVID-19 Funeral Benefit. I did that, because I had applied for and received that benefit after my parents died in January. My father died of COVID. My mother died the same day, from advanced Alzheimer's disease. I posted about my experience because the FEMA program did not get a lot of coverage and I wanted DUers to know how the program worked and what was involved in applying and qualifying for the benefit.
Last month, EarlG forwarded an email to me. It was from Kevin McCoy, a reporter for USA Today, who had found one of my DU posts about the FEMA program and wanted to contact me. Since DU's administrators never give information about DUers to anyone, that was how EarlG handled it. So, I contacted the reporter.
The reporter wanted to interview someone who had successfully navigated the process of getting that benefit. I was happy to answer his questions. The process is more complicated than it might be, so I knew it might be difficult for others to apply for and receive it. That's why I detailed the program in my DU post.
After I answered his questions and agreed that he could use my name in the article he was writing, he asked if I could send him a photo of my late parents, with me in the photo looking at their picture. I said OK and had my wife take the picture, which I sent to the reporter.
The article in USA Today can be viewed at the link below. This link has the article without the USA Today firewall:

My reason for posting this today is to let people here know that what gets posted here on DU can sometimes find its way to others and be seen by a much wider audience. So, when you post, please keep that in mind. If you want that to happen, be sure to include likely search keywords in your post title. This is not the first time that posts here on DU have gotten national notice and it won't be the last..

(43,850 posts)I appreciate the need to communicate and work through things with like minds but it can work against us when we discuss opinions and reactions as fact before checking them. And Im far from perfect here.
But I like the fact DU is on top of so much. We just need to be careful how we say things, so people know were stating feeling or opinion and dont pass on those as facts.

On March 6, an MSF shipment of emergency medical supplies was delivered to the Ukrainian Ministry of Health in Kyiv. The shipment contained 1,400 cubic feet of supplies, including surgical kits, trauma kits, and basic necessities for intensive care units, emergency rooms, and surgical operating theaters. These supplies are now being sent on to hospitals in the city and other towns further east where they are urgently needed. We are sending additional supplies to the country.

(151,269 posts)Funerals are hugely expensive, and the funeral industry works hard to shame people into spending more than they can afford to bury their beloved relatives. This benefit could help many recover those costs. Sadly the people who need it the most probably don't know about the benefit.
That's why I was happy to talk to that reporter and to share information here.

(151,269 posts)If we live long enough, we have to bury our parents. And our parents always hope we live long enough to do that. My parents were both 96 years old, and had been married for 75 years. Sadly, both were in failing health by the time they died. My father's greatest fear was that he would outlive my mother, so he could keep caring for her. She died about an hour before he did. He didn't know that, but he would have been glad.

(6,956 posts)pretty sure I stumbled onto DU from a bartcop link. I sent Terry content now and then and he actually published it. He was Mad magazine in their truth to power sixties heyday (back then mad accepted no advertising AT ALL so as not to have their POV corrupted, publisher Gaines was front and center at the fifties during mcCarthy style DC witch hunts that posited that horror comics caused juvenile delinquency and thus the "comics code seal of approval" published on the covers) and had a cynical humorous well informed and expressed outrage about the morbidly wealthy that own and run everything. a corrupt and stupid lot. putin is a shakespearean tragedy and tfg is an archie comics tragedy.

brings back memories. the 2000 corrupt hyper partisan SC election decree and the invasion of Iraq in 2003 confirmed autocratic corrupt far right ideology would crush Democracy. How much corruption the PTB's has been accelerating since that 2000 un American SC decree is dark history we have all lived through.
Hopefully Putin's Hitleresque and incompetent invasion will shine a light on Republicans who are financially supported by Russia and useful idiots that allowed Putin to infiltrate America with divisive propaganda. The root cause of our current civil war Putin invading America from within. those Republicans have betrayed every American citizen and every Oath of their lifetimes.

Malcolm is a NATIONAL TREASURE and he is well informed, courageous and goes to the hot zones when actual combat happens. I think he recently came back from an entire MONTH in Ukraine. And he thrives on military life, which I respect because I'm a lover not a fighter and would get shell shock at my induction physical. His communication skills are magnificent. Always well informed, articulate and understandable and well explained. He is simply UNTOUCHABLE.

(151,269 posts)had very advanced Alzheimer's and was under hospice care at their home. Neither thing was survivable. I did not, however, expect two phone calls just an hour apart. It was very strange, since they were in California and I was in Minnesota and unable to travel, since California was in the midst of a major COVID period and quarantines were in place if you traveled there.
Oddly enough, though, it turned out to be easier to deal with all of the necessary arrangements at a long distance. Between the phone, internet, and emails, everything got arranged very quickly, and there was a lot to do. Had I been there, I might have been tempted to go to places to make arrangements, which would have taken an enormous amount of time.
Fortunately, my sister and her husband still live in the same town as my parents. My sister also has Alzheimer's and her husband is her full-time caregiver, so he was not available to get everything going.
All the same, it was a chaotic period of my life. My parents' estate was fairly complicated and I was their executor. All of that had to be done from a distance, as well. Fortunately, they had a very competent attorney and I have some familiarity with legal stuff. So, everything happened quickly, and I helped with a number of legal processes to help speed things up.
All in all, though, I don't recommend a year like last year to anyone. Very, very trying.
