"LONE" has multiple definitions...

plus it's a secondary definition after:
having no companions; solitary or single
It was an offhand comment, but I found it annoying (if not absolutely incorrect).

but that wasn't the sentence construction as there was no collective noun, so it was referring to a group of individuals.
