Yuri Gagarin, the first person to journey to outer space, has had his name removed from a fundraising event amid Russia's aggression towards Ukraine.
[link:http://|Futurism] first reported the story.
The US-based nonprofit Space Foundation announced on its website in a now-deleted note: "In light of current world events, the 2022 Space Foundation Yuri's Night is renamed 'A Celebration of Space: Discover What's Next.'"
It added: "The focus of this fundraising event remains the same to celebrate human achievements in space while inspiring the next generation to reach for the stars."

(9,165 posts)and the article does nothing to dispel that. Gagarin did not remove his name; he died in 1968.

(38,417 posts)...The race into space encouraged the building of smaller computers..smaller and even smaller...!!
And Parts became even smaller, and even more smaller, and cheaper..and more cheaper.!...Therefore,
there are more components in the computer you are using now, then those large ones that took up
a full room in the 60s and 70s..
Why make them smaller...So you could go further in outer space and eventually in early 70s, the computers
helped humans to land on the moon. ..............
Therefore, Yuri Gagarin helped to encourage the downsizing of computers that we are using right now.
..The ...Space Race helped the world get to a point where computers are used for everything and they have
made life safer in many ways. (Like the computers in cars that warn you..or the computers in hospitals that
make you better and keep track of you & your medicines.) The use of computers is everywhere.
........................................this one is VERY IMPORTANT!!......................................................
......................................SO ....think about it..........................................
..The space race and the race to get smaller computers helped us to live better and longer....
.............................AND...HELPED US TO COMMUNICATE BETTER...!!!!
..........................JUST LIKE WE ARE DOING RIGHT NOW...................so...
............SO YURI GAGARIN IS A ...HERO..TO BE APPLAUDED AND NOT TO BE IGNORED...HE,
..............HELPED TO CHANGE THE WORLD FOR THE BETTER......stupid is still stupid..

(38,417 posts)................and I ...........never thought that I would own a computer in the 70s..much too complicated to operate.....
.................................and in the 90s when they were first sold to private people.........they were much too expensive.
..........So, I was totally wrong about me not owning a computer.................oh no........time to hide again...

(40,208 posts)Yuri Gagarin has been dead for over 50 years. His achievements and who was as a person should be acknowledged. Erasing historical figures because of a current situation is something that would have occurred in the former Soviet Union.
Removing his name was dumb.

(51,308 posts)He had nothing at all to do with this recent horror.
Is the Smithsonian going to take down their Sputnik display too?

(8,543 posts)He died over fifty years ago, so it seems unlikely.

(14,118 posts)use some common or un-common sense and realize that we can sanction Putin
and still enjoy the great Russian music, dance and top our salads with the delicious
Russian Dressing without fear of public condemnation by those misguided persons who
infest our world culture.

(4,690 posts)Early versions included caviar, thus it's name. Supposedly the modern version was developed and commercialized by an entrepreneur in Nashua, NH in the 1910s.
