According to the UK Parliaments Intelligence and Security Committee, the UK government does not know andincrediblydid not try to find out.
This was the question at the heart of the long-awaited Russia Report, the 9-month delayed, 55-page assessment of Russias malign interference in UK politics. Produced by an independent committee of nine members of parliament from several political parties, including the ruling Conservatives, the report became highly controversial because Boris Johnsons government tried to block its publication.
The report is damning. It says that the government, along with its intelligence and security services, underestimated the response required to the Russian threat and are still playing catch up. It asserts that Russian influence in the UK is the new normal [ ] the UK is clearly a target for Russian disinformation.
If Russia did have a role in tipping the 2016 Brexit referendum, the report asserts that it was not through direct involvement in the voting process, which, in the United Kingdom, is done entirely with paper and considered very hard to corrupt.
But the report leaves open the possibility that Moscow-based information operations, especially through social media and Russian state-funded broadcasters like Sputnik and RTand backed up by targeted support to influential voices within UK politicsmay well have been a significant factor.

(15,219 posts)Apparently the whole repuglicon party in the US is in thrall to this psychophant - including the unelected former president (tfg).
And then putin has spread his poison over many other countries and wannabe leaders. Where did he get this power? The ruble, even in the best of times was not as treasured as the US$ or Euro.
There have to be some receipts for the IOUs somewhere. There have to be some closeted rational thinkers that decide to expose what they know. Stuff like this can't stay under the slimy rocks forever.

(3,949 posts)Thom Hartmann tells the story of how years ago Putin gathered Russia's oligarch together and they found one of their own in a cage in the middle of the room. Putin tells the other oligarchs that unless they give him half of their wealth the same thing would happen to them. Many think he's the world's richest person, all ill-begotten, of course.
How can we put an end to these criminal psychopathic dictatorships around the world?

(7,402 posts)In America it is the dark money from Citizens United. The UK must have something similar.
Being only slightly less corrupt than a country like Russia is no consolation. Corruption is one of the largest problems the world has politically, but the answer is not to lurch rightward as that is where the problem originated from. Will Putin invading Ukraine finally be the straw that broke the camel's back where political reform actually fixes the problem? Probably not.
