generally dragged up when some state wants to protect some evil practice like slavery or voter suppression.

We should not forget that one of the biggest concerns of the Civil Rights era was the right to vote. Repubs are reviving their voter suppression efforts of the pre-Civil Rights era. Repubs know that if everybody votes, they are fucked, because their "policies" are so regressive and repressive.

One of the major duties of the Federal Government that emerged in the 2d half of the 20th Century is the protection of individual citizens from the depredations of the state and local governments. The Sovereign Citizen movement is a prime example of that. We need to strengthen the Fed's ability to fight those types, not weaken it.
