4. I'd say your wallet, and their response back to you on your donation(s). I had one charity, that

didn't even respond one wit, after I donated a thousand bucks to them, no thank you card, no acknowledgement, nothing.

After that, their literature to me was tossed into the trash, and I even responded once to them about this, explaining why.

There are other charities out there that are more deserving, believe me. There aren't just one charity doing just one thing, there are probably 10 or more for each kind of donating event.

Start w/ the big boys, such as Good Will, The Salvation Army, or United Way (by the way, UW has already vested the charities under its umbrella).

5. Goodwill? Never!

Most people don't know Goodwill is a For Profit organization. Their CEO make a fortune!

paid their CEO, crap, I think $600 K.

9. I will not donate to the United Way

Back when I was working at minimum wage for the state, UW ran drives at each of the offices. Workers who earned minimum wage or less were pressured to donate amounts out of their paychecks to automatically go to UW. Some of the workers they were intimidating to donate had to rely on food stamps and assistance to make ends meet, but the pressure was intense. The various supervisors played off each team against each other to try to force "contributions" and it was pretty clear any bonus or wage increase was partially affected by the "team spirit" of being involved in getting your "team" to win.

Back then (mid 1970s), Clerk IIs for the State of Florida earned minimum wage - that was my rank. Clerk Is earned less than minimum wage - allowed since state governments were not subject to minimum wage laws.

10. And I do remember where I worked, they always pushed us to donate at least 1% of our salaries

to UW. I hated the pressure. Now that I'm on my own, I donate to my pleasure and whom I please, and believe me, there's plenty of good choices out there.

7. Charity Navigator. You can look up an organization you want to give money to & find out ...

… what percentage of your donation would be going for “overhead,” like salaries. One reason I mention Direct Relief so much here is that all of my donations go toward their mission, which is to get medical supplies to disaster areas. Charity Navigator confirms their claim, and then some.
