There is a palpable relief among many here that we have a potential impending catastrophe to worry about rather than the election of 2012. Many people to whom I've spoken have said words to the effect that this will give us three days or so to deal with a hurricane so that the elections will be three days closer and they won't have to worry about it for that time.
That presumes of course that there will be a semblance of a neighborhood left after this hits here. We have gigantic trees everywhere and I fully expect the power to go off quickly and stay off for a while, possibly days. I have a generator, plenty of gas, and plenty of food so I'll probably gain weight if I'm stuck.
On a philosophical note, I survived Hurricane Agnes in 1972 by the skin of my teeth, and am aware of the dangers and sequelae of stupid actions. In other words, If you don't hear from me for a few days, don't believe that I decided to move over to FR. I wish everyone who has to deal with this and with the election "good luck", just in case I'm incommunicado.

(13,776 posts)I'm so sorry. It must be awful to be dreading both the damage and the cleanup. I hope both your places make it through without a scratch.
Good luck to you and to PCIntern and to everybody in the storm's path. Obviously, we all really hope it's not as bad as predicted.

(5,946 posts)I have been thinking of selling the place at the beach (just a small trailer in a trailer park) for a couple of years, getting too old for the long drive. Always said it was just a matter of time. But the clean up here could be pretty bad, Had the october storm last year and it took me a long time to get all the branches out to the curb. Still have one 20 foot one sitting on the back yard, broke my sawzall blades on it, huge! And this spring I came home to no power and 3 15 foot branches on the ground that took out all the lines to the house, Hopefully won't do it this time. I really hope the 500 year old tree makes it, I think it looks strong. I haven't sold my house because when people buy houses now, the first thing they do is cut down the trees (note all my neighbors)
Must say though,I have all the water from emptying the beach at home now, don't need anymore. Just need bread, but don't want to go into crowds, but must do it!

(19,841 posts)so your fears are well founded. Don't worry --we will carry on. Just be safe and get back ASAP.
I would chalk it up to election fatigue...if people are seeming to welcome the break of a big storm, as long as they themselves are not too impacted...
Nobody needs this. It will be disruptive. The challenge is to get things up & running again by election day since PA doesn't have early voting (which may not be a bad thing in this case)...
