OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Six teenage girls on a high school lunch break were killed when their small car with only four seats collided with a large truck hauling rocks, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Wednesday.
The crash occurred shortly after noon Tuesday in Tishomingo, a rural city of about 3,000 located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) southeast of Oklahoma City, the patrol said. Those killed included the 16-year-old driver, three 15-year-olds, and two 17-year-old passengers, according to the patrol.
While what led to the crash is unknown, it highlighted concerns of teenagers carrying other young passengers.
Just adding a single passenger under age 21 increases the risk of crashing by 44% when the driver is a teen," said William Van Tassel with AAAs national office.
The crash report, released Wednesday morning, said the circumstances of the wreck remained under investigation. But Highway Patrol Trooper Shelby Humphrey said Tuesday night that the girls car was making a right turn when it collided with the truck, KXII-TV reported.

Only the 16-year-old driver and front-seat passenger were wearing seat belts when the 2015 Chevrolet Spark collided with the truck, according to the Highway Patrol.
The unbelted people put everyone at risk," Van Tessel said. "In a crash, the unbuckled people fly around all over the place, injuring others inside the vehicle.

(20,584 posts)Whose daughter bought a Chevy Spark. I was gobsmacked that she and her boyfriend could fit inside of it. They are S-M-A-L-L. He's about 6'2 ", 200 lbs. and he hated getting in and out of it. It was more of a car that you wore, rather than sat in and felt secure.
It's unfathomable to me how six girls of any age fit inside a Spark. Maybe four 16 yrs. old girls TOPS, and that would be uncomfortable as all heck, and safe for none. Now add two more teenage girls and a truck hauling rocks, trying to occupy the same space at the same time and it doesn't take a genius to figure out the final result.
So sad, because you know if any of those girl's parents had been there this wouldn't have been allowed to take place. 😢

(2,281 posts)One of the girls had lied to her parents that she was working at her Wendy's job that night. Her parents chose a different funeral home and funeral time. The other three were all at the same funeral home. the driver, 16, had said, "whats the sense of having a license if you never let me drive the car?" so they did. The night of her burial, her distraught father went back to the cemetery and tried to dig her up. 1980 and they will always be teenagers, and always be gone.

(3,282 posts)Structurally the back seat area looked sound. Possible the rear passengers could have survived with seat belts, but apparently 4 girls would have been back there in a car designed for 2. That probably was a significant factor in their deaths.
Front of the car was completely destroyed and the driver looked to have had no chance, probably front passenger as well.
