Sympathetic Magic

Living in an area where it snows hard a few times each winter but people always freak out about snow forecasts, I am used to the supermarket-sweep suburban looting (looks like looting, but you pay for the stuff on the way out) phenomenon.

People react to snow forecasts by filling their carts with milk, wonder bread and toilet paper. All white things... hmmmm.

And people are reacting to this hurricane warning by frantically buying all the water.

Not that anyone consciously thinks that paying money for things symbolically like the feared weather is a sympathetic prophylactic magic sacrifice.

But we don't consciously think a lot of things.
