(93,532 posts)... who want to minimum bothside the issue don't see too much wrong even LEGALLY in the battery Smith committed.
This is how people like Trump get away with it; too many republicans justifying his bullshit.

(110,301 posts)connects that it's about a "beautiful badass hero." It meant no more to me than if he'd said she should be GI Joe.
But Demi Moore played a character who WANTED to shave her head, not someone who very reluctantly did it because of her disease.

(5,013 posts)It may not be ok as such but it is something you see quite often in real life. Ive seen many a person take a beating for talking shit. These circumstances are a bit different though. A fifty year-old man, on national tv, responding like this to a dumb joke from a comedian is not the kind of behavior you expect to see. This is a kids on the playground or drunks in a bar kind of thing. Smith came off like an unhinged whack job who has serious emotional problems. Youre supposed to have more self control than that.
On the other hand, theres only so much disrespect one should be expected to take. If you keep mouthing off to someone, eventually youre going to get punched in the mouth and deserve it. I dont think this was enough to cross that threshold but the Smiths have been the butt of jokes for a while now, perhaps this was just the last straw for him and Chris became a convenient target for that pent up frustration.
It wasnt a good look no matter how you slice it and certainly should have been handled differently.

(4,229 posts)This wasnt someone saying something Will Smith didnt like, this was someone humiliating and body shaming his wife (who has shaved her head to cover her alopecia condition) on national television, him seeing the pain she felt from the joke, and with her recent infidelity and his presumed need to show he could defend his wife, he lost control.
There are times to turn the other cheek and there are times when there is a call to action. You cant just lump them all together as someone saying something you dont like, because it was much more than that.
Suppose someone was ridiculing your spouse in public. Are you going to just stand there and take it? Would you defend your spouses honor? And is your cloak of civility masking cowardice or true pacifism? Smacking someone for bad mouthing your spouse is certainly a time honored romanticized response, especially in the movies.

(3,483 posts)Assuming that simply leaving is possible, that's what I'd do. If not, I (and my wife) would simply ignore it. I most certainly wouldn't walk over and put hands on the person doing the ridiculing.
Know why? Because I'm not a toddler and I have self-control, as does my wife. Also, there are precisely six people on planet Earth whose opinions/thoughts truly matter to me. If anyone outside that group ridicules me or my wife, I really don't give a damn. The most important reason I wouldn't put hands on this hypothetical person is that the first person in line to call me a dumbshit after the fact would be my wife. She would be disappointed in me for that loss of control, and as you might imagine, she's one of those six people.
I'll grant you that it's highly unlikely that someone will ever ridicule my wife in front of a global audience, but I don't think that really changes anything. Putting hands on the person doing the ridiculing is still not the correct response. Time-honored tradition in film notwithstanding, real life isn't a movie.

I recently read some excerpts from his book. Truly ick.

(45,071 posts)Men who are big and strong often think they have a right to smack people. Especially if they know theres no consequences. Smith must be 5 inches taller and 50 pounds heavier than Rock.

(3,483 posts)If Dwayne Johnson had been the one making the joke about Jada's shaved head, it's highly doubtful Will Smith would've walked up and smacked him.

(24,698 posts)So said The Former Guy. You can grab someone by the pussy, if you're a star.
I don't think it would be ok if you or I used violence. We (or, at least, I) are lacking the fame, fortune.

(4,552 posts)But I still think it was staged. Look at Rock in this video. He is sticking his chin out. Also men do not smack they punch.
This was a staged event.
