General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIt's not that I have patience for or blind faith in Garland.
Its not even that I trust he will do whats right, given certain circumstances.
Here are some of the things Ive seen in just over a year.
Few FBI investigations in our countries history have required such vast resources.
Over seven hundred people arrested and charged. Including heads and members of some of the worst groups in this country. Those arrests often came with warrants for electronic devices.
To his credit, there arent a lot of leaks, but we do know they have been probing the fake electors. That brings it to the political level. He isnt just going after the people who stormed the Capitol, Garland has crossed that line.
He has to be enjoying the J6 committee. I dont think he is as bothered by them as they are by him. To be clear, I fully back our members who are calling Garland to task. Garland will do as he wishes and I think he is rather enjoying the hundreds of people interviewed by the J6 committee, including people in the Trump administration, and a lot of additional things flowing directly from their actions. Its not that the J6 committee is going to find something he couldnt or hasnt, but this is a lot of information he can use to corroborate or disqualify information he believes to be true. Huge if he does go to the top with subpoenas.
There are other signs he is going up the ladder but I think you see my general point.
I also think we are right to not simply trust him. I hope you see that what Im doing is not blind faith. I know he isnt getting fired and I dont see a reason for him to be. I do currently believe he is a good person for the job. I reserve the right to drastically change that opinion of him.
The J6 Committee and the FBI have done a great job, IMO. There are some big decisions to be made by Garland, many Im sure he has already made. The lack of details from Garland is frustrating yet impressive.
I think there is room to show both distrust and patience, at the same time. I think there is reason for only distrust. We know justice is not blind and it is administered by humans. I think there is reason to simply show trust and patience. The players are in place and working, what else are you going to do?
I think there is even greater reason to be really happy Barr isnt AG.
We conduct every investigation guided by the same norms. And we adhere to those norms even when, and especially when, the circumstances we face are not normal. Merrick Garland

(21,478 posts)that's what committee member Luria said tonight.
I agree about the fake elector investigation, but we do not know how long it has been going on.
As Nicolle Wallace said, when Garland said that he would not be partisan, if he goes out of his way to not be partisan, he will be partisan.

(349 posts)Great thought put forward by Wallace. Thanks for sharing it. Well placed.
I do believe the J6 Committee will be turning over information. Some of what they have done Garland has access to, though limited. The J6 committee also has a report coming up. I think it will be damning and include referrals for prosecution which will include gathered information. Im not saying Garland will do anything with it. I am saying I think its a prosecutors dream.

(22,191 posts)hasn't) since so many people are concerned/worried that nothing will get done/etc. He doesn't need to be specific at all, damaging the progress of the case(s) etc. being worked on, and we do deserve some sort of status report, after all, as the taxpayers footing the whole bill, we should get some kind of feedback.

(349 posts)I had some of his recent quotes in my post before removing them before posting. The quotes were of him clearly stating that all those criminally liable will be charged.
"We are not avoiding cases that are political or cases that are controversial or sensitive." Garland
"We begin with the cases that are right in front of us with the overt actions and then we build from there, and that is a process that we will continue to build until we hold everyone accountable who committed criminal acts with respect to Jan. 6." Garland
The Justice Department remains committed to holding all January 6th perpetrators, at any level, accountable under law, whether they were present that day or were otherwise criminally responsible for the assault on our democracy. Garland
All of these quotes are from this year. I do greatly appreciate you bringing it up in the way you did. I removed it from my op as I thought the ambiguity could open the door for a debate that might have distracted from the point I was trying to make. I do think his general remarks are exactly what I want and expect to hear from the AG. That alone is a tough pill to swallow as we know that what is said is often not what is borne out in reality. This aspect is one of the reason I feel people are justified in their questioning of what's really going to happen. It's not like a competent AG is going to say something different even if the end results offer something different.

(2,985 posts)This is basically as much as Garland can say, if he's doing his job correctly and it indicates he's doing the right thing.

(349 posts)I don't want to kick multiple discussions saying thanks to each individually so I will leave this here. It's nice to be welcomed. Thank you.
