(12,338 posts)The Russians have pulled out from the area around Kiev.
They know they can't take the city so they're moving forces, regrouping to strike Ukraine again in the South and East.

(12,338 posts)It's a force of habit... it was KIEV in history and reference books until 2006.
And in 1995 or 2006 all the old books didn't magically CHANGE to Kyiv.
I've referred to it frequently as Kyiv but do type out of habit sometimes.
To be honest... it's neither. It's Київ
Kiev, Kyiv, it's just the Anglicized version of Russian or Ukrainian.
Since 1995 or 2006 (depending on Ukraine or UN) the preferred version is now Kyiv.

(2,330 posts)And she spells it Kiev when she messages me. Shes young enough that Kyiv would have caught on with her. So, Id taken it from her that its more a matter of preference in translation. I also realize that Cyrillic doesnt translate exactly into our Romanized alphabet, either.
Not an argument, just my personal experience with a Kyiv citizen.

(12,338 posts)The Russians have switched to "Plan B"
And that means withdrawing from Kiev to regroup in the East and South to accelerate their attacks.
But it's still a great victory for Ukraine.
Brings back memories of several classic "Capital City" battles... and they were ALL hard fought.
Battle of Moscow, 1941... similarly the Germans never got past the suburbs. Counterattacks and Old Man Winter pushed them back.
Battle of Berlin, 1945... even though the Germans were worn down and starved, a core of hardcore Nazis and SS soldiers inflicted HUGE damage on the Russians before the city fell.

(12,338 posts)Now the Russians are going to look to support the land they've seized, from Kherson in the West to Mariupol in the East.
Plan B is the concept of taking a land bridge to Crimea and daring Ukraine to take it back.

(15,233 posts)It appears Russia is far more cautious regarding Odessa the Ukrainians appear to have anti ship capabilities now. It would be a good lesson for Russias only real ally China to ponder. World War III is developing as a cautionary tale.

Vlad just announced conscription draft of something like 150,000 men, so he's still got plans.
He will need to hold Donbas, and may try to hold the port cities.
Still, it's great news that Ukrainian flags are flying proudly.

(1,849 posts)LONDON, March 31 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin on Thursday signed a decree ordering 134,500 new conscripts into the army as part of Russia's annual spring draft, but the defence ministry said the call-up had nothing to do with the war in Ukraine.
https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-drafts-134500-conscripts-says-they-wont-go-ukraine-2022-03-31/
They are lying at every turn, Vlad and his ministers.
The information about this draft comes with all sorts of denials, explanations, and excuses, and they lie.

(7,611 posts)For the US Army to train a professional infantryman. Doubt it the Russians will be doing that.
MyMission
(1,849 posts)Most of vlads conscripts will have 3-5 months of professional training (if they're lucky). I wonder what are they training them to do? My mind imagines laying land mines, working a machine gun or armored tank, basic shooting skills, maybe naval training if they're eligible or inclined. I assume aviation training would take longer, and probably is for professional military and not conscripts. They probably will be sent to some front line somewhere. Below is a relevant quote from the Reuters article I mentioned above. I also mentioned they lie, but it's worth mentioning again.
Shoigu said on Tuesday that those called up would begin to be dispatched to their assigned bases in late May.
"Most military personnel will undergo professional training in training centres for three to five months. Let me emphasize that recruits will not be sent to any hot spots," he said in remarks published on his ministry's website.
The US military is very well trained. It seems the Ukrainian military is also.
The Russians, not so much.

(43,153 posts)It's a stunningly beautiful city and the thought of it coming under attack was heartbreaking for me.
Unfortunately, that's not much comfort for places like Mariupol, which lies in ruin and the human suffering amongst the population is unspeakable.
But still, good news is good news.

(6,573 posts)As always, take with a grain of salt, but even if the number is half that it's significant.
I'm certainly seeing a lot of pictures of destroyed & captured equipment armor, & a short while ago Oryx said they were approaching 100 pieces added to their list of destroyed & captured equipment today, all new additions, not backlog. Oryx counts all losses so their number includes Ukrainian equipment too, but the total is overwhelmingly Russian.

(32,577 posts)I'll bet a lot of those Russian soldiers would rather defect to Ukraine than go back to Russia, at this point.
The ones who fled Chernobyl were CLEARLY lied to. None of those young guys were even born when Chernobyl blew up. None of them knew the dangers of walking around there without breathing apparatus, digging trenches, etc. Those guys are all exposed to toxic substances now, including the commanders.

(3,103 posts)...Pootie's nuclear arsenal is in as rough shape as his army. Otherwise I fear he's just clearing his troops out so he can level the place. Really hoping I'm wrong about this, but I can only imagine how pissed he must be.
Bottom line is there us no good option here for Putin. If he loses he loses. If he wins he loses. So there is literally nothing left for him to lose. Not a good situation at all.

Also I saw a photo of a captured tank elsewhere today with a gas mask -- I fear Russia is preparing something terrible after pulling its owns troops temporarily out of harm's way.

(90,301 posts)... acute radiation sickness ie the gas mask.
I also agree that Ukr has to watch the Belarus border seeing there are mass equipment movements in the center of Belarus heading south.
I think at most they're feints to keep large forces at the Ukr norther border if the mines are NOT the time decay type.
