My kid's best friend has Covid.

He apparently got quite sick with it despite being vaccinated. Was at his sickest about a week ago, and still very audibly sick on his Skype call to my kid right now.

His other best friend has had it, apparently more than once.

They're currently being homeschooled in order to keep their 82 year old grandma safe.

Pandemic definitely not over yet.

Can you say "Super-spreader Event"?

We're required to attend, but I'm going to take personal time to avoid that cluster.

3. the vaccines and boosters do not prevent infection

they lessen the severity of the disease.

Masking helps... but Omicron and the sub variants are so contagious that it takes very little of the virus penetrating the mask or migrating around the edges to cause an infection.

The good news is that Omicron tend to infect the bronchial passages (airways) and less in the lungs... whereas previous versions of Covid tended to lodge in the lungs and then migrate in the blood to other organs... causing havoc.

The vaccine and boosters fight the infection (cause the body to be trained to fight the infection) at the entry point, meaning you are likely not to develop a lung infection or the infection is less severe and lasts a much shorter period of time.

Many people will be infected and never even know they picked up Covid.

5. That's why I thought it was notable that the kid got pretty sick.

If a healthy, vaxxed 12 year old can get that sick, I really worry about a healthy vaxxed, boosted 82 year old.

I'd seen one scant mention 4-5 weeks ago saying there is deep lung involvement.

11. I read what you guys were talking about up-thread. A member of my immediate family has it

and she and the rest of my immediate family and I were together for all of Sunday, including a good amount of time in a closed car. (The rest of us tested negative this morning.)

But on Wednesday when she tested positive, what occurred to me was the huge luxury we had of knowing that, even though she has it and the rest of us might get it, we were all likely safe due to the vaxes and boosters.

I could have cried with gratitude. This is my pod and one of us has it. But, really, we are safe.

How different it was for so many families till such a short time ago.
