NYT: Russia has given up on taking Kyiv (map)

Map of towns where Ukrainian forces have recently reclaimed control around Kyiv

Maps: Tracking the Russian Invasion of Ukraine

... Ukraine’s army claimed to be in control of dozens of towns to the west and east of Kyiv where some of the most intense fighting has been going on since the beginning of the war. If Ukraine’s stated gains hold up in areas where Russia has withdrawn its troops, these movements would mark the largest shift in fighting around the capital in weeks.

Videos posted to social media appeared to show abandoned streets in the suburb of Bucha, which had been one of the most contested areas around the capital. And satellite imagery of a key airport in Hostomel by Maxar Technologies, a U.S.-based imaging company, appeared to show that Russian equipment had been removed sometime in the last 10 days.

But the wide range of Ukrainian claims made on Friday were impossible to independently verify.

Even as Ukrainian counterattacks have pushed Russian forces north, fighting has continued in areas west of Kyiv in recent days. Russia has also been conducting air and missile strikes on Kyiv and Chernihiv, according to Britain’s Defense Ministry.

Is there an increasing likelihood of Ukraine surrounding the remaining Russian occupied regions in the south?

Kyiv is actually a difficult city to hold. The Ukrainians were extraordinarily well prepared, and the Russian approach was deeply flawed. This is a massive black-eye for a modern military. Not quite the equivalent of the US being turned back from Baghdad in 2003 (had that happened...), but pretty close.
