It had to be about 20 years ago: my Texas-based RWNJ brother and his then wife, who was even wackier, joined the rest of my family for a reunion here in Florida.
The subject of taking the kids to Disney World came up. RWNJ SIL said she'd never take her kids to Disney because of all the kidnappings.
When I asked, she explained, quite earnestly, that it was well known that pedophiles stalked restrooms at the parks. They grabbed kids going in on their own (parents waiting outside), drugged them, put wigs and different clothes on them, and escaped with their prey. These poor, poor parents never saw their children again. The media was, of course, complicit.
None of this is new, folks. But now, it's the Republican mainstream.

(179,847 posts)I have been to Walt Disney World a good number of times. My son has a time share (Disney Vacation Club) and he takes his sisters for a sibling trip once a year. The whole family was at WDW in December and we had a good time. My kids know WDW like the back of their hands and even when young went to the parks by themselves. I remember having two children in a double stroller for a couple of trips. I still remember my middle child when she was four trying to run off with Chip and Dale.
My middle child got married at WDW and it was a fun event. It was during the food and wine event at EPCOT.
My kids are headed to WDW in May and I am not worried.
I am enjoying the attacks by DeathSantis on WDW.

Wait till they find out that ESPN is part of Disney.

It's weird for me to watch because corporate management has always been very conservative but in this time of trying to keep employees they have to stand up for them. I think its great employees are finally being noticed.

In a statement sent to employees on Friday, Disney CEO Bob Chapek also announced that the company would increase support for advocacy groups fighting similar laws elsewhere (such as one recently introduced in Georgia) and would reassess Disneys political donation policies. Chapek apologized to the companys workers for not making a statement sooner, writing, You needed me to be a stronger ally in the fight for equal rights and I let you down. In response, DeSantis criticized what he called the companys woke ideology.......
Im glad that they have finally spoken up and I hope to see more of it in the future, said GLAADs Ellis, adding that as a major company, Disney has a responsibility to stand against what she calls corporate complacency in the face of anti-LGBTQ legislation.
Disney is one of the largest employers in Florida, so all eyes are on Disney to see what they are doing, and then others follow, she said. Ellis also hopes that Disney will double down on LGBTQ storylines, which can enlighten viewers to the prejudices that allow bills like the one in Florida to pass. People receive information differently through entertainment than they do when theyre reading a newspaper or hearing someones position. It has such unique power, she said Thats where you humanize us and use these stories to tell why this stuff is going on.
DeSantis' feelings were hurt by this

(69,364 posts)Unfortunately, the internet provides a highway for all those folks to get on and find each other. And the algorithms companies use to get clicks make things worse.
This morning while browsing articles on Facebook I was offered an article about how "Joe Biden fell asleep on his feet again yesterday and mixed himself up with Michelle Obama." Just blatant made-up lies, offered as truth along with other news articles. That's the difference.

(179,847 posts)I truly believe that the TFG supporters who believe in the Qanon stupidity are mentally impaired and sick people. I truly do not understand how such an ignorant theory could become so popular and how there can be several idiots in Congress who believe this crap. These idiots actually believe that there was a child trafficking operation in the basement of a pizza restaurant that did not have a basement.
The crazed beliefs of the Qanon idiots are reflected in beliefs of the OP's family members. I have lost count on the number of times that my family and I have been to Walt Disney World. My son has a good number of points in the Disney time share and the whole family had a nice trip in December in a time share on property that had three bathrooms for five people. I have never been worried about the crazed pedophile theory in the OP. We have taken our children when they were babies and now my children. I really love the fact that my son takes his two sisters and brother-in-law to WDW every year for a sibling trip.
I cannot understand how TFG supporters can be so stupid that they buy the Qanon crap. Heck I am really amused at some of these idiots waiting for JFK or JFK Jr. to show up in Dallas. I agree with the OP that this stupidity is now mainstream.
Again, I have been going to WDW for a very long time and I have never heard this RWNJ theory. I feel sorry for the idiots who believe this theory but these idiots mean that the crowds are slightly smaller.

(46,056 posts)SO has been a public school teacher for 25+ years in our now red county. He's had to deal with FCAT and all the other crap the R legislatures have sent their way. Also, most of his co-workers are Republicans (which totally boggles my mind), so there's that.
He wants to work one more year after this one because he loves working with teenagers. The things these kids deal with are beyond comprehension. Yet they, for the most part, graduate. Many go on to college or trade school, or the military. They get an education almost in spite of the used car salesmen in the legislature who determine way too much for public education. And in spite of, many times, their parents - who are a truckload of idiots (some, not all).

(179,847 posts)DeSantis is a homophobic asshole who does not believe that LGBTQ children s should be consider part of a family. Luckily Disney has a very different view of what constitutes a family. The GOP are out to punish LGBTQ children to score political points with their base and Disney is not playing their game. I agree with Disney as to the definition of "family friendly"

One reason is simple. In part thanks to pressure from the companys employees, Disney understands that American families dont look the way they used to. Fox News which has eagerly taken up DeSantiss side in its feud with Mickey Mouses parent company ran an entire story based on the complaints of two older people, one of whom said that Walt [Disney] would be rolling over in his grave at the companys actions. In reality, what would probably have flummoxed the companys founder is that the families who attend his park include parents of the same gender or different races and that more and more children these days are expressing themselves in ways that arent easy catalogued as Dick or Jane. Thats also not the world in which Foxs men-on-the-street grew up......
That younger Americans are more liberal, particularly on issues related to race, gender and sexual identity, is one reason that corporations have been more willing to engage publicly on the subjects. It appears that the pressure Disney faced came from within, not from the public. But this has also increased awareness about corporate activism that often reflects positions that align with the political left, inspiring frustration and backlash from the right. A Republican governor attacking a prominent corporation in his state is also not in keeping with long-standing practice and would probably spur confusion for past Disney executives......
Theres a broader question here about why Republicans have suddenly reembraced rhetoric targeting gay Americans. The collapse of opposition to same-sex marriage a decade ago marked a shift in the national conversation about same-sex couples and gay people, but only on the surface. It seems clear that, as with the recent focus on the increased voice of non-White Americans, the rise in visibility for gay and transgender Americans has provoked a backlash. The perception is often that increased visibility for non-White or non-heterosexual people is a constraint on straight Whites or an encroachment on their power.
