The drone footage shows three cars speeding along an empty main road just outside the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, when they suddenly turn around and race back - all except one.
This white car turns, but then stops. A man steps out and raises his hands. Then his body falls to the ground. Moments later, Russian soldiers approach. An elderly woman and child leave the car, and a soldier walks them away.
The man on the ground was Maksim Iovenko. The 31-year-old was shot dead by Russian forces that were positioned at the roadside. His wife Ksenia, who was in the car, was also killed.
Their six-year-old son and the elderly friend of the family who were with them escaped, although she was wounded and remains in hospital. (Both families asked us not to name them.)

(63,221 posts)They were just trying to flee to safety. They were innocent civilians. Why kill them?

(27,639 posts)It's the Russian modus operandi. Also seen in Chechnya and Syria, in the "humanitarian corridors" from Mariupol and other cities over the past month (and, I suspect, we will soon find in the areas of Ukraine occupied by Russia since 2014).
It just shows that the "victory" document accidentally published by Russia a couple of days into the war, where it boasted of a "final solution to the Ukrainian question," wasn't just an unfortunate turn of phrase. Nor were the "kill lists" circulating before the invasion an exaggeration. It is now clear what the playbook for Russian occupation of Ukraine would have entailed: wholesale genocide, deportation of survivors to far-away gulags, and resettlement of the country with ethnic Russians who would have ensured it remain a Russian province for the foreseeable future.
How can one "negotiate peace terms" with such people?

(63,221 posts)Just like our republicans, every accusation they level is a confession of their own character. They are the ones who are acting like Nazis, in fact, even worse. That entire government needs to be obliterated.

(55,137 posts)the extermination of Jews. They are so well planned and in such detail. They obviously never expected to lose and hoped that physically covering up the dead was going to hide their crimes.

They are savages and deserve to die.
