I've heard it many times but if I ever saw it in print, it did not leave an impression with me on how to spell it correctly. Live and learn 
I just have to laugh at the image of sticking a shoe into…., well whatever 
I guess the expression is too old or too rural to be in regular written use. As kids un grade school, we used to sing songs from a children’s song book, and one of them was called “Shoo fly, don’t bother me,” so we all knew how it was written back then. We would “shoo away” what we didn’t want near us, where we’d “shoo in” what we did want near us. So, a “shoo-in” was what was later called “a cinch.” Not to be confused with places where certain Republicans deserve getting a shoe in—preferably a large size, with a steel toe, and delivered at high speed.
