General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsRichard Engel on MSNBC covering the Bucha massacre is chilling. He was relating the story of a
woman who was standing in her home as Russian troops shot her husband dead. She described how they put the gun next to his head and how part of his skull came off. Then the Russian soldiers started yelling at her because she said "shoot me too, you have killed my husband, and left me with nothing". Despite her pleading for the Russian soldiers to kill her to, they instead said she and others in the town were nazis, and deserved what they were getting. Saying they were a threat to Russia, echoing the same dangerous propaganda that we are hearing from Russia and Putin.
He went to other homes where similar events transpired, where the Russian soldiers went from house to house, looking for young people, and if anyone talked back to them or they didn't like the look they were given they would shoot them on the spot.
To describe this as a "made up incident", is false, and one witness after another came forward to bear witness, and tell Richard Engel their stories

I don't think the Ukrainians will be very forgiving.

(1,160 posts)I think they may actually believe or want to believe the propaganda, and that's how they can do this now, but will there ever be a time when they realize they believed lies (willingly or willfully) and that they committed horrible crimes against innocents?
Maybe some of the older folks who actually were in a war (Vietnam?) can tell me. Did any of you go in gung ho and realize you were committing war crimes? Do you know any people that did?

with that false nazi propaganda...as if Ukraine with a Jewish president is a nazi nation.
Putin knows that "nazi" is a loaded and hated word in Russian because of the 20-some million Russians lost in WWll wheh Hitler's actual nazis invaded Russia.
Putin has unleashed this savagery on purpose to take Ukraine for it's many resources. He doesn't care if its people survive at all.

Then he can repopulate Ukraine with Russians.

Propaganda plays a role but a decent person recognizes atrocities despite propaganda simply by having empathy for a fellow human being.

(6,601 posts)Every inhumane act in modern history began with words. It began with messaging (propaganda) that demonized a particular group & brainwashed the target audience into believing it was ok to commit atrocities against that group, because the group was getting what it deserved.
From the OP:
"they instead said she and others in the town were nazis, and deserved what they were getting"
Look at the effect messaging has had on these soldiers. Look at effect its had on the Trump cult.
If we are to win the political war (for elected offices) in our country we MUST win the messaging war.

I'm ashamed to say that while watching the UN security council meeting as the Russian ambassador was spewing his lies, I couldn't help but hope that somebody would just stand up in the middle of the council meeting and blow his brains out.

There is no such separation between Putin's lies about Ukrainian Nazis and the troops he sent who commit atrocities.

War atrocities. THIS is what Vladimir Putin will forever be remembered for. He's one of the greats alright, one of the greatest evil dictators of all time. He'll be remembered along with other greats such as; Pol Pot, Tojo, Hitler, Stalin, Gadhafi, Idi Amin etc. etc.

(111,342 posts)One village mayor said they stormed into her office and demanded to know where the black uniformed nazis were. Apparenlty, she looked so dumfounded that even Russian meatheads realized she had no clue what they were talking about, but it didn't stop them from killing her husband for having a gun, unloaded and never fired.
A lot of the stories are just like this, Russian army guys chasing propaganda ghosts and finding none, turning on innocent people, the old "shoot anything that moves."
Part of the reason is because it's this kind of war, they generally never see the small, light infantry companies with western weapons that have cut their nice, neat military formations to ribbons. They never see them, so they shoot at anything they can see: old people, kids, apartments, hospitals. And that is war crime.

Shes only a year older than I am, so Im sure our memories of post-war America are quite similar. Judging from some of the conversations Ive had here over time, I get the impression that my generation was swamped with imagery from that war, from the Auschwitz death camp to Hiroshima survivors, that faded almost completely away by the time our children were through school.
So I know she knows what she is looking at.
