Yesterday, Russia again complained bitterly to the current President of the UNSC, who happens to represent the UK, about not getting his next day emergency meeting. I think that Barbara Woodward handled the complaint well, explaining what happened and why the meeting wasn't held immediately, but within the time limit required.
I think that Russia will test this system of complaints. The UNSC stated that all requests for an emergency meeting would be honored, as they had been here. I think that Russia will manufacture a new emergency complaint, just to make this point and to test the Security Council. They want to use the UN as a puppet for their PR, as stated in the Olympic Manifesto. This is going off the rails for them.

(8,543 posts)... was the Russian Ambassador complaining about the emergency meeting not being held until the next day. It seemed to give a strong impression of their priorities.
A horrendous, unfounded accusation of barbaric crimes has been made against the Russian military... but first let me complain for ten minutes about not getting an emergency Security Council meeting convened as quickly as I think the great federation of Russia deserves.
It appears the rest of the Security Council is not as eager to hear your lies as you are impatient to spread them.

More important, they matched that show of unity with substance: a remarkable joint statement, running more than 5,000 words, that can be described only as a blueprint for combined confrontation with the United States. The two countries endorsed each others foreign policy wish lists, with Russia affirming Chinas opposition to any forms of independence of Taiwan and China denouncing further enlargement of NATO. China agreed to buy $117.5 billion worth of oil and gas from Russia.
Though not quite a green light from Beijing for Russian aggression against Ukraine, which was not mentioned by name, the statement signals that, if Russia invades, China will help Mr. Putin withstand the crippling economic sanctions that the United States and its allies plan to impose. In fact, the document says, there are no limits to the twos friendship and no forbidden areas of cooperation, suggesting that it could some day extend into intelligence sharing and weapons development.
Not since the early Cold War and the alliance between Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong have Moscow and Beijing pledged so openly and comprehensively to cooperate in world affairs, during what the Xi-Putin joint statement called a new era of rapid development and profound transformation. For perhaps the first time in modern history, the West faces a Russia-China pair, both of which are not only unremittingly hostile but also strong militarily, modern technologically, solvent economically and stable politically.
